Oil separator
Hi All
Could a failing/blocked oil separator cause the engine to burn oil after it has been ticking over for a short time, and also account for a mysterious oil leak that comes and goes over a period of months ??
Very grateful for any help

A mates D3 was burning huge amounts of oil. He was only seeing a bit of smoke on start up and couldn't detect any smoke in his mirrors while driving. After going around the houses, it turned out to be the oil separator, not very expensive at all but a to change apparently.Stu

Thanks for the replies
Which part of the separator fails, does it have a mechanical part that breaks or wears out.

He's not sure as he didn't change it himself. Was done about 3 years ago and doesn't use a drop of oil now. Mileage is now about 190000.Stu

Does anyone know what part of the oil separator fails ?
Is there a spring operated valve or something else.
Many thanks

It's probably clogged with gunk or has leaky seals. I've seen them come out spotless after 150k and I've seen them full of dreadful gunge on much less miles. yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ
