Intermittent 'Battery' warning light. |
|
Getting an intermittent battery warning light on the dash on my 2005 TDV6.
Light will come on randomly, stay on for a while (an hour or so) then just as randomly go out. Might stay off for 20mins or so, then randomly come back on.
Battery voltage is OK (14.5v engine on, 12.8v off)
Any suggestions as to the cause?
I suspect the alternator is starting to break down (it's not had one, so 15y is pretty good going), but want to eliminate any other possible causes before I shell out £200 on a replacement.
All advice gratefully received.
Many thankingyous

I would check the earth connections as the system does not see the voltage you measured. If you have one of those voltage display "thingies" (technical term) that plug into the lighter socket you can see what the voltage is when the error lamp is lit. This will give you an idea of what the problem may be.

alternator was faulty, my local workshop pluged his "computer" and registered the voltage with engine running at different rpm, and was able to find that the voltage out the alternator was dropping down suddenly...so orange light!

Yeah, that's what I'm suspecting it is - dodgy alternator.
I'll plug it in to the ICarsoft and see if that picks anything up, but I'll probably end up chucking a new alternator on it....
Thanks for the replies. If it has TIT's or WHEEL's it will cause you problems!!
