Hi. looking for some help. had a problem on Tuesday on way to work the temperature gauge shoot right up to over heat the suddenly dropped to the bottom the jumped back up to normal temperature. Then the car suddenly slowed down. when i pulled on to the hard shoulder and opened the bonnet there was steam coming from the engine. I removed the oil fill cap and there was steam coming from there as well. I dipped the oil and the dip stick was clear. I checked under the car but could not see any water or oil dripping from under neath. had to get recovery yo get car home ( that's another question). Any one got any ideas. Thank you for your help.

How much was the slowdown?
If it was “just” power loss, can be just the headgasket, but a feeling like engine braking.. could be worse..
a seizure due oveheating (after the headgasket was blown) can be, the difference between repairable engine or Near “scrap” engine...
Eitherway At least one head of i think... Best regards
Harold

Hopefully the power loss was the ECU detecting the overheat and loss of coolant and it shut the engine down - but until investigated who knows.
As a first step I would record codes and then clearing them - then refilling with coolant and starting it is a controlled environment (not driving) and checking for leaks and again getting hot - if there is an obvious leak - great (thermostat junction pipe) - if no leak obvious and starting to get hot then things need to come off - like heads.

Head gaskets are prety rare on these engines. I would have a good look for signs of a leak and if its not obvious get yourself a pressure tester and see if you have a leak under pressure.
