It’s already sewn up by this establishment on Old (as opposed to New) Sukhothai main drag. Big Cry Big Cry

And this place in New (as opposed to Old) Sukhothai has the market for Santa outfits well and truly sewn up. Heat stroke anyone? Whistle

Today was a bit of a shopping and lounging day so took the TrukTuk to New Sukhothai, even though we’d completed the shopping in Old Sukhothai. Come back cushioned front loading tuctucs, all is forgiven. Laughing Laughing

Bit of a wander round, purchased the newly remembered essentials (water bickies and VinCol) and went for a pizza. I love the way the Thais turn the normal BBQ chicken pizza into a Thai BBQ chicken pizza, they just chuck a fistful or two of chillies on there. Hot but scrummy.

And to go with it, my fave pizza, a Hawaiian. With bacon and chicken. Shocked Shocked

All washed down with very nice beer from Lao.

Well when in Thailand do what the Laotians do. Whistle

Oh, and re Gold Leaf backie, I’m not that old. Whistle Whistle

Will bung up a few pics from Saturday once I get them loaded up, I’m afraid more temples but peeps will be glad to know that’s it for temples, we’re officially templed out. Unless they have temples in Aus and, subject to how hot it is in Aus and the fires, NZ. Thumbs Up

No pics from Sunday as spent most of that day down with a bit of a bug. Big Cry Big Cry

Another gratuitous Christmas tree pic.

Mind you it felt positively Christmassy this morning, it was only 12c when we ventured out. Freeeeeeeeeezin! Breakie was had with fleece & hat on, if we had gloves we’d have been wearing them!! Looking forward to heading south and finding the toastieness again as our blood has thinned. Thumbs Up

And greetings from the train from Phitsanulok back to The Big Smoke, ie Bangkok.

My view for the next few hours, that and out the window looking at fields, fields. & more fields. Sugar cane as I type this. Thumbs Up

Saturday was a car & driver trip to a town shade over an hour away by car, public transport would have been a PITA as the buses are long haul & may or may not take peeps on short segments.

Last temple pics, honest. Not sure if in right order but getting to the stage that one temple looks very much like another. Plus the temples in Thailand are not a patch on the Khmer temples in Cambodia.

Both slobbing, SWMBO shopping. I’m banned from t-shirt shopping, we took 3 hours to buy me 2 tees last time in BKK. Mind you most of that was size issue, they tend to stop at what we’d call XL here. Big Cry Big Cry

And yes, still alive. Whistle Whistle If I wasn’t I’m sure the AC in heaven would be silent. Thumbs Up

PS And good morning from a sunny, if not a tad hazy, morning in Bangkok. Nice to wake up & see temps in the 20s, none of this 12c malarkie. Thumbs Up

Couple of Chrimbo pics from sunny Bangkok. Thumbs Up

Really nice Chrimbo tree in the lobby of the hotel. Now if they lost the Christmas lift music all would be well, esp considering our room is on the 29th floor. Oh, and in the lounge, the lounge should deffo be a Chrimbo music free zone. Thumbs Up

And Christmas in Space, or is it Spaced Out Designer, opposite the hotel. Very weird in the heat, prob also weird in the cold. Thumbs Up Plus just noticed the HNY2020. Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

And a nice view of Bangkok traffic, mostly taxis.

We’re off tomorrow to the Platinum shopping mall to the left of the Novotel, todays shopping wasn’t all that successful in the posh CentreWorld mall. We’ll be using the elevated walkway on the left of the pic, even though it was bouncing up & down slightly. Shocked

Morning all and greetings from suburbs of BKK, on a train heading for Kanchanaburi and Bridge over the River , Mae Khlung, although some film producer dude thought it was the Kwai. And it stuck.

Bus first, no pic but took us straight to the river ferry port.

Bit of hoofing to a small station then 3rd class non AC train to River Kwai station. Apart from the hard seats it’s pretty nice with the breeze once we get moving. Also made sure we are on the shady side, it’s pretty full on sun atm.

Fun looking into living rooms, very UC&P.

PS Better view from the train now. Thumbs Up

A few days near the Bridge on the River Kwai, well as from yesterday’s post, kind of. From https://www.seat61.com/Bridge-on-the-River-Kwai.htm :

There is a slight technical problem with the Bridge on the River Kwai: It crosses a river all right, but not the River Kwai. Pierre Boulle, who wrote the original book, had never been there. He knew that the 'death railway' ran parallel to the River Kwae for many miles, and assumed that it was the Kwae which it crossed just North of Kanchanaburi. He was wrong - It actually crosses the Mae Khlung. When David Lean's blockbuster came out, this gave the Thais something of a problem. Thousands of tourists flocked to see the Bridge on the River Kwai, and they hadn't got one, all they had was a bridge over the Mae Khlung. So, with admirable lateral thinking, they renamed the river. Since 1960, the Mae Khlung has been known as the Kwae Yai ('Big Kwae') north of the confluence with the Kwae Noi ('Little Kwae'), including the bit under the infamous Bridge.

Another couple of pics from yesterday’s travelling. No wonder there is a nice breeze through the carriage, apart from the windows, none of your push button electric/Star Trek doors here. It does let you alight from the train just before it stops, living life on the ragged edge indeed. Thumbs Up

The view across the bridge from the train platform with our train about to head out. Quite something but it was hot and we had to hoof it across the tracks to our hotel so hiking across the bridge, dodging any of the 6 trains a day, was a not a priority.

The view from breakie this morning. Looking out over the river and up to the bridge, fantastic.

Plus doubly fantastic, the Thai red curry that was about as hot as I liked to go, superb given the location. Plus pineapple smoothie to put out the fire. Thumbs Up

And out to watch the morning’s train from a BKK crossing the river. The right hand curved arches are the original ones, oblong ones replacements after our American cousins bombed the bridge towards the end of WW2. The concrete and steel bridge was put up a few months after the wooden one, as in the type in the film.

Back end.

Our train yesterday was only about 5 coaches, this must have been treble that. Must be coz it’s the w/end. We’re heading further up the train line in the next couple of days, will prob wait until Monday when half the peeps of BKK are still in BKK. We’ll also be heading to the small museum at the bridge and get a pickup taxi to the CWGC cemetery at Kanchanaburi, prob tomorrow.

Not doing much today as trying to keep MrsDSL as cool as possible to try and get on top of a bad case of prickly heat. Big Cry Big Cry

Calamine & antihistamine seems to be helping but not stopping new bits flaring up. Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

A couple of old locos and a truck train “preserved” next to the station.

Lots of tourist trap t-shirt stalls and street food vendors. It was mobbed.

And it takes a bit of getting used to in this part of the world, smile for the camera. Historic bridge behind. Thumbs Up

Hope Mrs Del is ok.

The little museum by the bridge is good to visit but the CWGC cemetery is a real "got something in my eye" visit Embarassed

When we were there, many many years ago, there was still the remnants of a wooden bridge slowly sinking into the river.

Will visit the museum today, plus head to Kanchanaburi by pickup truck sawthingie (can never remember the name). Will have to be careful as it’s going to be 34c and full sun here today so might not get to see all we want to. If we don’t it’s not the end of the world as it’s only a short(ish) train ride from BKK and we’ll prob be in this vague part of the world this time next year on trip #3. Thumbs Up
