spare wheel winch
hi all here's a daft question.
dropped the spare on my D3 and now can't get it back up again is there a knack or is the winch fubared?
it barely lifts the cable alone

You cant lift the cable on its own it twists the cable up and knackers the winch.
I saved mine by hanging on the cable while somebody worked the winch back and forth until it freed itself

You will need to carefully unwind the cable keeping a significant pull on it all the time . It may need a few turns in & out to free it off

Well I stripped the winch but to no avail reckon there’s a part missing as there is no friction to wind cable back.

If u do have to get another winch , just a quick heads up there’s a modified one now that has a steel sleeve over the end
Used in conjunction with a RLD spare wheel protector plate sold from this great gent

spare wheel winch strip down
The problem is common and a design fault. So many hundreds have been replaced by dealers and forum members.
A common cause is following a puncture to put the punctured wheel in the boot rather than put it back under the car. The cable is then winched up until taught to stop it swinging and this creates a kink in the cable. Some users have proposed to straighten the kink but that still leaves the deformed barrel to work on.
The winch does not appear to be a particularly complex component (hence the design fault?) and after market winches cost as little as £35 on ebay and can be replaced in 10 mins.Dodgy Landy
