Snapped bolt - Advice and Guidance needed

Afternoon all..

So I ordered a replacement auxillary/fan belt with the tensioner from a reputable seller. The tensioner was BRITPART so I assume decent enough quality.

The bolt was a 14mm head and I measured the thickness of it - was 9.5mm.

Went to torque it up and according to the haynes manual it should be 35 foot pounds. Waiting for the torque wrench to click.. no click.. kept tightening it.. SNAP bolt snapped. Big Cry

Now I have a bolt snapped into the bracket that holds the tensioner.!! I believe it is a bracket anyway, I think the alternator is mounted to the same bracket.

Anyone ever had this happen? anyone able to recommend the best tool/method to remove the snapped bolt?

I have some reverse screw removers, but not sure they will work. Is it too much of a pain to remove the bracket and do this on the workbench or am I likely to face issues with the other bolts that hold the bracket on?

pics below:

I had added some copper grease to the bolt:

Are you sure it wasn't 35Nm the manual stated (26 ft)

You don't need a torque wrench, just do it up with care.

If you can't get mole grips onto the end, and undo then yes remove the alternator? and then bracket to extract.

If you lubricate a bolt or nut you invalidate the torque wrench setting. The figures quoted are for unlubricated fixings.

Hi Ronald thanks for that info as I didn't know that.

As for the snapped bolt not sure if it was the copper grease that did it, but when I got some grippers on the snapped part - it came loose fairly easily. So that was very lucky!
