DISCOVERY 3 HANDBRAKE PROBLEM?
Need to explain a common fault with discovery 3, after 3 years handbrake started squeeling and eventually locked on and couldnt move.
landrover assistance told me to ring AA ? they dont want to know after warranty has expired.
There is a release cable under the blanking plate by switch which after a huge tug releases the brake.
a tip is to remove the fuse for handbrake otherwise the brake reapplies when stopped again.
the brake was " adjusted" by the liverpool dealership and worked o.k. for a month then locked on again and i was told it needed a new sender unit which would cost at least £600.00,as it took 3 hours plus to replace.
Speaking to other landrover owners the problem with the brake is widespread and once the squeeling noise starts you need a new brake system.
Land rover support claim there is no problem with the hand brake and it is your own fault for applying the brake?
The system is flawed and the dealership knows it but keep stum.
I think all handbrake problems should be rectified free of charge by landrover due to POOR DESIGN.

Alan's pointing you all in the right direction - bombard LR with VOSA defect reports and maybe we can force them to acknowledge that there may be something wrong with the design of the EPB.
Most of us (including me) have been fortunate in that our EPBs have seized on in non-dangerous situations but Nodo$h and others haven't been so lucky.
Read Nodo$h's report at the start of the thread and then consider that it may happen to you one day. Act now, fill in a VOSA report if you're not happy with your EPB and maybe we can get LR to do something about it .Now an ex-D3 owner after 7 happy years. Miss the car but not the big bills

Automatic handbrake release problem
I've just had squealing handbrake as previously described, together with auto-handbrake release sticking. Thought you'd like to know my local dealer has diagnosed it as caused by wear to brake pads. They have "stripped and cleaned out brakes and lub fixing points. Adjusted and bedded in hand brake. Tested all ok".
Time will tell I guess but at a cost of £98.70 this has to be worth looking at instead of spending £600 on a new sender unit.

The EPB issues with the D3 are well known to just about ALL owners
Usually if you are firm, even subborn you can get a dealer to have a look and adjust FOC, I had to scream and shout a bit to get mine to roll over and play (oops I mean pay)
Anyone who drves off road and in particular through deep muddy water (or worse) should throughly clean the rear drums and bake components asap to avoid making things worse.
Quite a few, including me, who have an automatic don't use the EBP at all, there is no need.

Help stupid automatic handbrake not working
Help, Stupid automatic handbrake yellow light on dash, and hand brake only comes on if you switch ignition off. Got MOT anytime now and assuming that it wont go through the brake test as it is??
Have had all the brakes checked and stripped down cleaned. But been told it will need to go to Landrover for the yellow light to be reset to make the handbrake work?? Any ideas.
Thankfully it does not stick on as in some of the other posts, it will go off if I press the button, just wont come on when I ask it to.
Many thanks inadvance
Karen

Sounds like an actuator problem. if the EPB was working, then the error would re-set itself.
Does it actually apply itself OK or doe sthe light just come on.
you say you can switch the light off? How? But you can't manually apply the EPB?
I'm assuming you have a Manual as you say it comes on every time you switch the ignition off.Bodsys Brake Bible

Hi sorry if not made myself very clear!
Yes it is a manual.
I can only switch handbrake on by switching engine off and removing the key, then it comes on automatically. otherwise if i try to switch it on using paddle it does nothing. On the other hand once it is on I can switch it off no probs using the paddle.
Yellow light on all time.
Many thanks Karen

Could just be a faulty EPB switch. It should try to come on when you press the button.
You're 100% sure it's applying properly when you remove the ign key? (sorry, just checking it's actually operational)
What happens if you hold the EPB switch down whilst removing the ign key? (it should not try to apply itself)Bodsys Brake Bible
