I've read the Bodsy's brake bible, I have the shop manual. Shop manual says:

Connect the parking brake cable.
Connect the parking brake cable retaining spring to the brake shoe lever, making sure the

Install the hold -down spring and retaining pin.
All good so far, then

Install the primary brake shoe.
Using a tie strap, tie back the speader plate spring.
Install the spreader plate and the spring.
Install the return spring.
Install the hold -down spring and retaining pin.
Not a chance.
What's the secret?
I have the IIDTool and have the parking brake in 'mounting' mode. Should I put it in 'latching' mode once I have it connected to the secondary shoe?2006 SE 4.0 V6 with rear locker

never used a tie strap.
From memory which won't be perfect.
Connect brake cable.
Join the shoes together using springs
But the shoe in with the brake cable connected and secure using clip.
Put the other side shoe in,
Give it all a giggle around so it sits correctly
Put the adjuster in the bottom
wiggle it all around
Thanks. I did figure out the 'trick'. Install secondary shoe, then assemble the two shoes with the large spring, put the spreader bar in place, then flip the primary shoe into place. Here's my 'tricks' for installing the retaining pin by yourself. Note the small magnet. This way you can hold the pin from behind with one hand and press in the clip with a flat blade screwdriver with the other.

Yes... what a pain getting the cables out of the old ones.
And for anyone else who comes across this my other 'tips' for installing the primary shoe are:
- Perhaps I'm just weaker than I used to be, but you need to really pull to get the primary shoe into position. Both hands as hard as I could, I pivot the shoe on the 'nub' (the piece with the chrome clip) and then down (or up depending on which side). I was standing on ice at the time so perhaps that had something to do with it, I kept slipping.
- also I think if I ever do this again, I'll hold off on applying the grease to the backing plates until after I have the shoes on, if that is possible. For me, it just ended up on all the wrong parts as I struggled to get the shoes on.2006 SE 4.0 V6 with rear locker

I struggled with my EPB shoes, one side was a doddle the other side a right toss, then I found out with the IID tool you can select demount mode and apparently its much easier
Still I must have done it right as 3 yrs later they are still good!

I have never cursed as much as when I was trying to fix the EPB and put the shoes back on, especially the retaining clips! And trying to remove the tie clip was a pain too.
I later found this video about the rear suspension which made it look easy at 38m02s in.
I had recently watched that video and totally forgot about him doing the parking brake. I must admit he did make it look easy. Mine went nothing like that. It appears that he doesn't put the retaining clips on until after both shoes are in place. I put the secondary on, then it's retaining clip, then attached the return spring to both shoes and then (hours later?) forced the primary on...2006 SE 4.0 V6 with rear locker
