Discovery 3 - torque convertor??

Hello,

Had my 2005 discovery 3 se 2.7 auto with 126k a couple of weeks now and I do love it. I've wanted one for a while and got a cheapest one from an auction that somebody possible knew the issues and just got shut.

So....I'm well into it now having blanked egr's, fitted new rear upper arms, brake lines, fuel tank cradle, front wheel bearings. Also got service kit to do on the engine next week and new discs and pads all round.

It driving super smooth now but unfortunatley the main problem I'm still having (which I thought the egr blank or front bearings may be sort) is a noise from the the drive train coupled with irregular gear changes....

At this moment in time I've tried to stay optimistic and hoped it wasn't the torque convertor but from the current symptoms I think it must be, but I wanted to get some expats opinions first.

So the noise is intermittent and almost rounds like a rattling/ratchet sound, it makes the noise randomly at the moment but I have noticed it come on when just lifting of the accelerator or when the auto box changes up or down a gear. But doesn't make the sound all the time.

The car also doesn't seem to select the right gears sometimes. Say you go to clime a hill where you think it would change down a gear it doesn't. It will only change down if you give it a fair bit of welly.

I'm not getting any vibrations as yet and when you do out your foot down it does seem to lock up well and the speed picks up as you would expect.

The car was surging a lot when driving but I put 1 tube of dr tranny in last week and although I haven't driving it much since it seems to have stopped the surging problem.

I guess I want to know if there is any slim possibility of it being something other than the TC, maybe a gearbox issue or something else?

Also, what costs are involved to just replace the torque convertor and finally, in your experience would you try and gearbox flush first or with my symptoms do you think it's a waste of time?

Also, the gear selector/pivot on the side of the gearbox has been adjusted so I don't think that it causing any issues.

Thanks for any input. This forum is amazing and I've already diagnosed other issues just from reading lots of other people's faults and fixes.

Top work everyone Thumbs Up

A gearbox flush is a possibility (as you indicate it was surging) if you do not know the state of the oil in the box, did you check the level with the engine running. Are any error codes showing up? It will only change gears going up a hill when the engine output cannot support the movement forward.

I haven't checked the oil level yet but will do this tomorrow. Should it be flowing out if the fill plug very slowly to be correct level?

A drop should come out at 40 degrees Celsius, see https://www.zf.com/global/media/medien_mas...145_EN.pdf
