Have you checked the relay R18 is the one that controls the fan. They all start off by only working intermittently, then stop all together. To check you can swap one over of the same rating and try it. It's a fairly common D3 fault.
Blower fan constantly works. I thought you may have meant the engine fan? Bit confused by this

I think you can get the drier seperate, was only looking a couple of weeks ago as replaced section 3 of the alloy pipes, that was a fun job.
Is the viscous fan doing its job when the a/c is switched on, ie dragging enough air through the rads?
Have you got an IID tool or someone local will plug in for you and see what temps the car is seeing/gas pressure etc?
It raws from cold and I have considered this before and cant get it to match with traffic VS fast driving/good airflow. So dont think its this
No IID tool, I am thinking this is probably the next step, but so expensive £££!
Lucky to have a great local independent (read fault codes for free e.t.c.), but aircon isn't their specialty so a bit stuck. The only reason I haven't purchase one yet.
Maybe ask someone who has the icarsoft to see if they can pull up info on the a/c pressures/temps etc and if so thats 100 quid versus the iid 400.
I dont know if you ever come Maidstone way, but if so I can plug in IID for you and compare to my car (also with rear a/c) see what the different readings are, obvioulsy have to check these figures can be seen on a non vin locked motor, but hazard a guess they can.
There might be a member nearer who would plug if for you and I could then test mine and again compare figures.

I believe the compressors aren't just on or off on these, they have a duty cycle, which I expect the IID can show. THat would be interesting. You could then see if the electroncs are telling the compressor to be off.
You should also read the A/C fault codes.
Having spend all the money on pipes, £400 on a IID is minor and holds its value for resale.
What happens if you turn the engine off and on again ? Does that fix it ?

Thanks for the replies guys.
Aircon specialist is away until the 10th. I will explain everything to him to see what he thinks. I'll also ask to see what diagnostics he has.
Will go from there...

Cheers Steve. I wonder how easy that is to change!
I searched high and low to find someone who could make replacement hoses, but no luck!

New toy turned up this week. Didn't buy it for this purpose at all, but was pleasantly surprised when I saw what information it could pull out.
Not worried about the codes really, every module was stacked full of them. The alternator died in March which killed the battery and all systems went bad - so guessing most, if not all of the codes were because of that. Replaced it recently and all is good, reset all the codes and they all cleared OK.
Attached are the codes anyway. Live data shows the pressure in kpa. You can also see the compressor current (didn't take a photo of that) which goes to 0.5A when turning the Air con on, but the air doesn't get cold (well didn't that time anyway)! Not quite sure what to make of that. No coded afterwards either.
Only had a quick play so will do some more delving this week, before I contact the air con specialist again.
