to be honest it could be anything of the same spec in the engine....

Most dealers have bulk oil tie-ups (we use Castrol) but the parts dept supplied oil STC50528 i beleive to be a Texaco brand.
The genuine oil has been deleted from Land Rover stock now due to some contractual agreement with Castrol who are the main oil suppliers Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes ( Don't get me going on this Twisted Evil ) so if you need a single litre oil you can't get genuine...only outsourced....(Yes, i know crap isn't it....welcome to my world)

Oh, and yes, the Ford oil for (Zetec i think)....5/30 is the same oil....
 TLO has left the building.......

I am just about to have an oil change done on my TDV6 and am a little confused over the oil spec. I understand the 5/30 and the B1/B3 bit but there seems to be conflicting opinion in the various posts on this subject over full-synthetic or semi-synthetic.

As I understand it the Castrol Magnatec is semi-synthetic and the Castrol Edge is fully-synthetic. I have looked on Castrols web site and they suggest that both are OK. Obviously the Magnatec is considerably cheeper than the Edge.

Which would you recomend that I use?

I went to the stealer to buy oil..........They didnt even have oil readily available to sell, so obviously The Large One's news has reached Oz as well.

I was then informed by one of the mech's that they use Magnatec Diesel which is the partially synthetic oil.

Now-my car hasnt been serviced yet, so I am not really sure what it has in it coming from the factory. I'd be happy to spend the extra $ and run fully synthetic in it if it would make a difference.

Finally, went to 2 auto stores and the only magnatec diesel they sold was 15W-40, so I gues this is what I will be running until someone clues me in a bit more.
Picked up my new MY08 Stornaway TDV6 SE late Feb. FULLY STOKED! Thanks in advance for all the advice/tips you guys have shared on here!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's interesting that the stealers use the Magnatec semi-synth. If it's good enough for them then it should be good enough for me.

In my local Halfords (local motoring chain store) the 5w/30 Magnatec is stocked in their petrol section but looking on the back it is rated A1/B1, A3/B3. I believe the A is petrol and the B is diesel so it is duel suited.

Looks like I'll use the Magnatec then.

wouldn't touch it unless the word DIESEL was highlighted boldly on the front of the pack.

btw, think we all know who Halfords are Wink

I'll have another look to see if it quotes "diesel" - bit of a mine field oil and I would like to understand what is right to use

(The Halford description was for the benefit of those in the Southern Hemisphere just in case they didn't know)

Think this may be of help.
Three brands - Halfords, Castrol & Mobil
Split between - Petrol & Diesel.

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/...gory_31345

Have a good read, saves rumaging around the packs in store.

Also this Castrol link
Tools - click 'which oil...' key in make & model
http://www.castrol.com/castrol/castrolhomepage.do?categoryId=3205

btw, sorry wasn't being flipant re Halfords
point taken Thumbs Up

Hi All,

Landrover recommend Castrol oils:

For the TDV6
the viscosity is 5w30
the grade ACEA B1/B3.

This can be either semi or full synthetic

& for vehicles under waranty I would suggest using a Castrol product.

Castrol oil meeting this spec is:

Castrol Magnetec 5w30 A1 (A1 + B1 oil) which is a full synthetic

On Castrols website they recommend this oil, but interestingly also recommend edge 0w30, but as it is the incorrect viscosity, it is not recommended by Landrover.

While Castrol does do an Edge 5w30, this, according to Castrol's website is not suitable for Ford fuel economy oil, as it was developed to replace the VW/AUDI Castrol SLX longlifeII, thus not suitable for TDV6.

We used to use Castrol Performance A1 5w30, which was their semi-synthetic, but this has now been discontinued & replaced with Magnetec 5w30 A1 (full synthetic).

Castrol tend to 'simplfy' their oil for the retail consumer market, & call it 'diesel' to help customers make a choice, but in reality, most are the same product for petrol & diesel, if it is dual marked, i.e. A (petrol) B (diesel) then that is fine.

ACEA explanation.

This is the European equivalent of API (US) and is more specific in what the performance of the oil actually is. A = Petrol, B = Diesel and C = Catalyst compatible or low SAPS (Sulphated Ash, Phosphorus and Sulphur).

Unlike API the ACEA specs are split into performance/application catagories as follows:

A1 Fuel economy petrol
A2 Standard performance level (now obsolete)
A3 High performance and/or extended drain
A4 Reserved for future use in certain direct injection engines
A5 Combines A1 fuel economy with A3 performance

B1 Fuel economy diesel
B2 Standard performance level (now obsolete)
B3 High performance and/or extended drain
B4 For direct injection car diesel engines
B5 Combines B1 fuel economy with B3/B4 performance

C1-04 Petrol and Light duty Diesel engines, based on A5/B5-04 low SAPS, two way catalyst compatible.
C2-04 Petrol and light duty Diesel engines, based on A5/B5-04 mid SAPS, two way catalyst compatible.
C3-04 Petrol and light duty Diesel engines, based on A5/B5-04 mid SAPS, two way catalyst compatible, Higher performance levels due to higher HTHS.

Note: SAPS = Sulphated Ash, Phosphorous and Sulphur.

Put simply, A3/B3, A5/B5 and C3 oils are the better quality, stay in grade longer performance oils.

Hope this helps.

Regards
Steve

Steve

Many thanks for the explanation and confirmation that I can/should use the Magnatec 5W/30

I also noticed that the Castrol site was suggesting the 0W/30 and that it s the wrong viscosity - it's interesting that the Edge 5W/30 is not suitable, I'd not picked that up.
