Hello
Sincere apologies if this topic/ post is elsewhere on the site but as a new member who has spent a while searching and not finding, I thought I would ask the question:
Now, I am not a mechanic but I am a carpenter/ joiner so fairly confident using a variety of tools. Also, as I am sure most folk would agree, a standard annual service on a D3 ought to be something that we could be doing ourselves without the horrific labour cost of the stealerships.
Having never attempted to carry out a service on my D3, I was wondering if there was a guide anywhere on this wonderful, informative site that would help myself and others to achieve this?
In terms of a guide, I was hoping for a parts and tools list and images showing what needs to be done; fluids, filters, belts, reset the service reminder etc.
I appreciate that if I do it myself I would lose the 'service history' stamps but frankly, I am not bothered. My D3 is a 05 plate with over 220,000 on the clock. Still going strong, I would like to add...
Many thanks in advance.

Its all diyable and as you can wield tools you will do fine, the one thing I would say to buy if you can afford it is an oilsafe pump, invaluable for gearbox and diff oils.

Hi
Thank you for your reply but do you know of a guide anywhere on the site showing what needs to be done for just a standard annual service i.e. how to change the filters, oil etc??
Thanks again.

Could someone let me know what is actually carried out during a standard annual service? Oil change and filter? Air filter? Fuel filter? what else ??
Does anyone have a comprehensive 'list' of jobs that are done during a standard service so I can then search the wiki for the how to do's for each of them??
Thanks a lot.

Atlantic British (www.roverparts.com) has a quite good maintenance sheet, too. It’s for D3 V8 so it is missing stuff diesels have. Might be still useful for you to take a look, you can ignore the product codes though.

If you have a diesel and the stealer claims they did spark plugs I’d make sure a. You have still have a diesel, b. They serviced the right car

In a nutshell its just oil and filters incl air and diesel, what you need to do is look at everything else and assess it on individual basis, is that wire rubbing? is that cill going rusty? are them brake pipes corroding?
Thats what people are really paying for the knowledgable eyes being cast over their machine.
This is what I do
Every 5k oil and filter
Every year air filter and pollen filter
Every year wheels off and check/lube pads and calliper slides incl EPB shoes
Every couple of years diesel filter
I do the exact same with all our cars.
Whenever I am underneath for whatever reason its torch out and a quick look around.

Excellent advice, thank you.
Just a case of doing the digging now and finding out how to do all the things on the list...
Thanks again to you all.
Just one other thing, do you need a 'special tool' to remove any of the filters?

Cabin and engine air filters are trivial.
Cabin is basically drop the lower glovebox, open slot, pull filter, insert new filter the correct way, close slot, close glovebox.
Engine air is open a bunch of screws, remove cover, remove filter, replace filter, replace cover, screw but dont overdo it.
I would advise starting with the cabin filter since it is quite easy to do and you can’t really do it wrong (except put filter the wrong way in relation to airflow but it doesn’t break anything).
If you’re changing oil yourself remember to verify what you’re putting in, counting how much you put in and don’t overfill. Overfilling is bad but so is underfilling.
Atlantic British has a bunch of nice DIY videos and so does the rest of YouTube, too. Stuff you’re unsure about can be done in three ways:
1. You do it and figure it out on the way. Some things I wouldn’t use this methodology on are stuff like brakes, belts, etc. potential for catastrophe is very high if done wrong.
2. You get someone else to help you out, preferably who has done it before
3. You outsource to a Indy and watch how they do it and next time you’re better prepared to do it (see one, do one, teach one..)
