Front End Knocking :- still can’t find the culprit...

D3 160k 2005
I’ve a blinking knocking driving me crackers, I’m pretty certain it’s originating from the front End so far I’ve changed :-

Front End
Lower suspension arms
Roll bar drop links
Inner and outer track rod ends
Anti roll bar bushes
Front Differential
Tightened all remaining nuts

Rear End
Roll bar drop links
Anti roll bar bushes
Tied up the harmonic dampeners
Drive shaft central bearing

I’ve checked the front upper suspension arms and they seem fine. As do the rear arms. No obvious play.
What have I missed...?! Thanks

Have you had a close look at the front upper wishbones?
Have a close look to see if you can see any evidence of the edge of the wishbone touching the chassis bracket where the bush is.
When dry you might see evidence of the wishbone touching the bracket by the end of the bush, enough to give you a knocking sound over certain circumstances.
Most play turns up on the lower wishbone bushes and people forget the upper ones have a hard life too!

i would check your small transfer prop to as they split the rubber gaiter and dry/rust up causing a knock.

Ok I will , I’m fairly sure it’s ok, only just put a (second hand) front diff on and had a look, although I got some help as was bit scared of doing that on my drive

The first reason I suggested the column joint was because you have changed most parts and secondly my 2005 03 needed this part at similar mileage.

Drive over some rough bumpy ground. Does the knocking then feel like a rattle in the steering wheel? If yes I think it will point towards the column. Easy DIY provided you have 1/4 inch socket set extension bars and another pair of hands to guide socket onto the connecting nuts.

It does occur over rough ground and I can sometimes feel it through the steering wheel. It’s also noticable when the car is lurching side to side, like when you go over an off centre speed bump at low speed.
The part I might need is just the joint? I was struggling to find it on my online parts place.
Many thanks

Think it is called "Steering Column, Lower".
Shaft with rubber UJ on the end....
I did mine and was a complete success for what you are describing.

Thanks for the link and pointing out they are handed, in
LHD So now I have an extra challenge.
I think I might have top suspension arms in need of replacement and this steering shaft.
I’ve found a local garage with one of those things you drive on that wobble the car about and they can (hopefully) then hear the knocking so I think I might get it on that first (forgive the technical explanation of wobble car thingy)

Thumbs Up and get the two new bolts that secure it. Both on Advanced Factors web site. You could reuse but why when new are about £4.
