Transmission noise on approved used Discovery 4 |
|
I am quite sure I know the answer on this but just wanted to confirm my thoughts.
I have a D4 bought from a dealer in June 2017 on the approved used scheme.
On collection among the faults reported was transmission noise.
It’s at the dealer now on its fifth visit.
They have finally agreed it makes a noise, have compared it with similar higher mileage one and state they all make this noise.
My other D4 a year older with twice the mileage makes none of this noise.
Does anyone else have noise similar to a defender transfer box type noise from a 70,000 miles D4 they consider normal?

Noise, like when shifting gears (“crunching”) or constant (like a high pitch whine)? Not sure what Defender type of noise is but I’ll go with the assumption of whine.
My experiences below:
Briefly had a MY10 D4 TDV6, so 6 speed automatic transmission, with at least 259000 km on it and the transmission didn’t make any noise that I would have associated with it.
I currently have a D3, slightly under 200000 km on it, and it is also silent when shifting or when driving.
If it is a whine it could also be at least:
- transfer case on the way out
- front differential
- rear differential
Do you know if anyone has ever changed any of the fluids in any of those? If the fluid being drained is full of small silvery pieces or the drain plug (which is magnetic) is the same it’s might mean that particular piece is failing.

It’s more a rhythm type noise, thrum, thrum, thrum when at constant speed.
On motorway 60 to 70mph, up incline 40 to 50.
Dealer “repaired” a transfer box leak before collecting it, so could have been running low on oil for a while or they it up “fixing” it?
In my view it should be as quiet as the higher mileage one!

Could it be front wheel bearings?

I suppose that’s possible, what mileage do others get from front bearings? It’s done just over 70k.
Although it’s mostly straight line travel you get the noise and have not heard anything whilst cornering? Discovery commercial tdv6 auto 2013

I am not over technically minded but have you considered whether it could be the high quality tyres makjng the noise?

Having just done my front wheel bearings (112.5k) I would say they would have to pretty bad to be making that sort of noise.
I had a slight noise on the N/S front. More so when turning right. Inaudible above 35mph. It then progressed and I started feeling it through the steering. I jacked the car and I had about 10mm play in the n/s front so I did the bearing the next day. Also changed the o/s.
Car is super smooth and quiet. Amazing for a 13year old car.

They have only confessed to hearing it since fitting premium tyres, not yet been witness to the sound with these on, but supposed to be doing so tomorrow.

Thanks for the response.
I think it must be either transfer box or front diff.
However the “they all make that noise” is not constructive!
I think if they try telling me this again tomorrow they will be wearing it as an adornment to there nether regions!
It’s taken them since June to admit it makes a noise.

Have you tried to capture the sound on video? I imagine you would have?
If the diff is making noise it is most likely in pretty bad shape. Taking a look at its oil might give a clue as to how bad it is. My understanding is that rebuild kits are not good and the only real alternative is to get a new one so it is kind of an expensive thing to have fail.

Dealer has the benefit of it at the moment.
As for cost, it’s down to dealer or the wonderful approved used warranty as it’s been there since day I collected it and reported it to them that day.
Did not hear it when I tested it initially as is flat around there dealership, hilly here in my location.
My gut feeling is it’s the transfer box as they have already been at that and the leak repair is not pretty!

Has new Goodyear wrangler all round.
They admit it makes a noise but it’s not too loud!

Noise means wear. Wear means eventual failure. You bought it with all their schpeal about buying with confidence and you paid a premium for that. They should sort it out IMHO. Good bye untrusted p38

We had a weird noise on a BMW X5. I thought it was a diff or a CV joint but it turned out to be the transfer box. BMW replaced it as a good will gesture. Still cost me £450 for diagnostics (twice as it was wet the first time), oils and software time.
