understand it’s not a disco but just the concept , maybe removing the handles and utilising the fixings points to attach a bracket

Agree I wouldn't try and mod the LR one its not attached to anything at roof line so if you hinged it you would need to make something to hold it up. Starting from scratch would be easier and cheaper.
Mines full height but i took the angle grinder to it and cut the bottom mesh off so the dogs can escape in an emergency.MY06 S - Gone but not forgotten
