Towing Upgrade Recommendations

I currently run a standard N&S type set up to tow a trailer. I have modified the trailer, using a caravan box of tricks, to use LED lights and this works extremely well.

I am about to replace the trailer with a new one that has both 13 pin electrics and LED lights, and am therefore looking at a more robust and future poof solution.

My proposed approach is to remove the rear bumper and existing N&S electrics, tidy up where the towing electrics are under the plastic cover plate which is pretty rusty, replace the N&S electrics with the LR 13 pin kit (DA2602) and wire in a TEB7AS Bypass Relay. Once the bumper is back on and a 13 pin to N&S adaptor purchased this should cover all eventualities.

Has anyone tried these products or has a better way to achieve the same end game please?

Presumably the relay is for the LED's to work properly

The rolls Royce solution would be to have a 12N and 13 pin socket on the LR

This would be quite a lot of work, so only really worth it if you regularly use a trailer with 7 pin

You don't need a full wiring kit, you can buy the last part of the 13 pin kit (socket and loom) on its own and switch it over.

https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic152765.html

Part number for the 13 pin socket LR011211 or older part YMZ500790

DA2602 is a Britpart aftermarket part number by the way, not the Land Rover number.

You don't need the bypass relay for normal wiring, are you trying to use it for the indicators?

Thanks for the responses.

The bypass relay is indeed for the LED lights. In particular the indicators will flash at a low level with the CANBUS pulse. On my current trailer I resolved this with the caravan unit but don't want to fix at the trailer side moving forward as it's not a long term fix.

@Martin Thank you for the LR part number which I had struggled to find! I developed a healthy dislike of anything Britpart during my D1 ownership and was hoping there was an alternative.

YWJ500211 or YWJ500160 is the LR part number for the full kit.

Are you doing to modify the loom inside the car around the fuse box to fit the bypass for the indicators?

Yes, I was thinking that the simplest way would be to introduce it in the 13 pin loom between the vehicle connectors and the 13 pin socket, utilising the battery live connection for power via an inline fuse.

I don't think a TEB7AS Bypass Relay is what you want, as the car will not know a trailer is present, and therefore will be unable to disable the rear parking sensors and disable the suspension height changes.

It's also completely unnecessary on your car.

There are other fixes for bloody LED lights on here

You raise a good point with regards to recognising the unit is attached. I can overcome the s with a load however do not see an ideal way to resolve all this sues vehicle side.

Your typing is worse that mine lol.

People have managed it on here with just 2 relays.

I'm surprised it works but well worth trying
