Windscreen vibration following replacement - now resolved!
Hi All
I have a 2010 D4 HSE and in Feb I had the windscreen replaced by National Windscreens.
The first screen was then swapped out (for a Pilkington Optikool) as it was faulty - there was loads of distortion.
The second screen has an odd problem; at motorway speeds, especially if driving into a headwind, I get a loud drumming/vibration noise from the screen. I've tried to trace it and it seems like it may be the whole screen vibrationg, but I cannot see that is the case in reality.
I've had the car back into Nat. Windscreens four or five times, had clips replaced, had the screen out and refitted, but the problem is still there.
NW are now saying that there is nothing they can do, and have referred me back to my insurance company who are having an engineer call me to investigate.
Before he arrives and leads me down the garden path, does anybody have any thoughts about what the issue may be?
Thanks for all and any advice
Richard

Windscreen replacement.
Had my screen replaced on Saturday and the fitters managed to damage both side trims in the process!
What annoyed me, was the fact that they obviously new that the trims had not gone back on securely and if I had not spotted it before they left, I would have had hassle getting them back!
Two replacement trims are on order from LR and are being fitted on Thursday
Further close inspection has revealed that the scuttle panel is not tight to the screen in the middle and the park position of the wipers is too low
Not a resounding success then

Interesting feedback. Interestingly the scuttle doesn't seem to be tight against the screen on mine.
The engineer will be here tomorrow to view it. I shall let you know how that goes.

I had a weird vibration / buzzing sound on my FullFat at anything above 65. It turned out to be the scuttle panel which wasn't tight against the screen in the middle.
Very easy to test - lift the wipers and put some masking tape over the joint (scuttle to windscreen - 2" tape is best) and put the wipers back down (mine rested on the top of the tape and aided keeping it in place).
Take it for a test drive and whilst the noise may not have gone completely it will have changed.
That's how I diagnosed mine and upon replacement of said panel the noise has gone. In your case it may just be badly fitted as it isn't old enough to have age-distortion.
Good luck!!

That's interesting, how hard was it to change that panel?

On the FullFat the biggest job was getting the wipers off as they pass through the panel - can't remember on the Disco though. I had to use a proper wiper puller and even then they were 'kin tight. Took about an hour but I was being gentle (read slow).
The scuttle panel was, from memory, circa £150 from Dan@Duckworths.
An indie would only charge an hour to fit it if you supplied the part. However, it will be worth getting your checked for fitment first. If they've damaged or misaligned one of the fittings underneath then a simple re-fit should suffice (again, I'm referring to a FullFat and not a Disco but......).
Certainly worth the 10 minute masking tape test even if only to advise the "engineer" who is coming.
Good luck - things like this can really spoil the enjoyment of your vehicle.

Finally, after many iterations of messing about, I've sorted it!
The car went to the windscreen company half a dozen times, windscreen in and out, trims adjusted, new clips etc. No dice - the noise was still there.
Eventually the windscreen guys washed their hands of the situation, said that they couldn't help any more and directed me toward the local LR dealer, at my expense of course... Luckily the insurance company were far more grown up and agreed to pay the bill
LR initially diagnosed the lower windscreen trim as being the issue - it was warped and loose, so they replaced it at a cost of over £500 for a piece of plastic! Still, they did wash the car, badly, for me
It seemed to work, for about an hour. So, booked it in again. The service guy noticed that the top seal was badly fitted and we used theoretical physics to justify sorting that out at a cost of around £300.
I picked the car up the day before Mrs. B. and I popped off to Pagham Harbour for our wedding anniversary. All the way to Sussex it was silent bliss. The sun was shining, there was a lovely weekend in a secluded cottage in store and lunch was lovely. Does life get any better?
Probably... On the way back, as we traversed Chichester there was a little chirp from the top left hand corner of the screen. We ignored it, so it turned the volume up. Then it got more frequent until eventually we felt we had to acknowledge the noise. It was back.
I fumed a little then decided to take things into my own hands, which often the best way I find.
Working in London the following week, I bought a roll of masking tape and carefully maked the whole windscreen, then drove back toward home, stopping regularly to remove and reposition tape until I could identify the absolute location of the rattle.
Having done that, I ordered a tube of windscreen sealant from eBay, for about £8, carefully removed the A-pillar covers, which is where I diagnosed the problems, luckily without damaging any of the clips.
With the trims off, it was obvious that the foam was compressed and old, and wouldn't seal properly, allowing air to enter and cause the vibration.
I lined the entire area under the trims with masking tape (to allow easier removal of the sealant in the future if needed) and ran a thin bead all the way around the foam, replaced the trims and went inside for a beer.
The next day, I drove to Basingstoke in blissful silence.
That was back in May, I've driven the car for a whole month, through rain, shine and biblical deluges and so far <touches>, all is well.
So, if you have your windscreen replaced and they don't replace the A-pillar trims, and you get a strange vibration, take a look at that foam. Had I removed the trims before ordering the sealant, I'd probably have ordered self-adhesive foam instead, scraped the old stuff off and replaced it, but as the job goes, it's a success and all is peace and harmony Chez Browne once more
Many thanks to everyone who made a suggestion as to possible causes

A few years back I had a badly fitted windscreen. When the depot "boss" came back to look at it, he diagnosed (rightly in my view) that the bead of bonding/sealant used around the whole windscreen was too thick. That caused the screen to sit high, preventing the A trims and scuttle fitting correctly. He was also annoyed that twice the right amount of sealant had been used, denting his profit margin. New screen fitted correctly and all well afterwards.2005, TDV6 S, Auto, 190k miles, owned from new, V8 Brake Upgrade, Nancom Evo, RLD protector, BAS EGR blanking & Remap, separate ATF cooler, changing all the fluids ahead of time.

I had this problem and changing the A-pillar trims for new ones cured it.

The OE methods suggest you replace the clips and foams, as compression causes them to degrade over time, i always replace them on new vehicle also.
