Rattling Tailgate

Gents,

I have read some comments throughout the forum of rattley tailgates on the D3 and all of you returned to dealer for attention.

Does anyone know what causes them to start rattling, mine has started and if it as simple as adjusting the slamming post or catch I would rather do it myself than face the hassle of taking it to the dealer etc. etc. I know it is not the gas struts coming loose as I checked them, having found the thread about that issue.

Thing that annoyed me is it started the moment I left the dealers forecourt after its last service and am not convinced they did something to cause it. Before it went in the tailgate was hard to close, didn't catch very easily but ok with moderate pressure, after visit closes much easier but now a rattle. Mad Hence my logic saying slamming post / catch.

i have had this ...if you stand at the back of the car and you push the top part of the tailgate(glass) at either side (just above the lower part of the tailgate) it squeeks.

I spray silicone grease on the two hard rubber stops on the underside of the glass and it stop's.

To adjust ..open the top tailgate and remove the plastic cover over the catch (just pulls off ) behind there you will find 2 small bolts ..this is how it is adjusted ...just had mine done

Bow down Bloody Bingo!

You could not have described it better, EXACTLY what I experience when I press the glass but deliberately left out of my post above, although I get more of a knock or click than a squeak but it must be the same thing.

I will try to find the two hard rubber stops and grease them first. Failing that I will try adjusting the catch.

Thanks. Smile

BIG thanks and I just looked through your gallery, glad to see such detailed pics of the electric mods you have done. May be tempted to try the DVD mod when my car is a bit older and I am not so scared of breaking something.

There's nothing hard about any of it ...every thing just pulls out ...although the glovebox was very hard to pull out first time. Then again you don't have to fit it in there .

If you need any more details ..i have extra pictures ..just uploaded a few for each modification.

Don't be afraid ..i had the rooflining and most of the interior apart within 6 weeks of getting mine !!!

And with the exception of 2 broken clips (about £2.00 from LR) all came apart and went back together again.

My tailgate started to rattle at the weekend, but it was not anything to do with these stops as silicone grease made no difference on closer inspection found a crack on the arm of the passenger side strut. Shocked But today the only way to open the tailgate is via pressing both the lock and unlock button on the dash Rolling Eyes

Glad the cars booked in with the dealer in the morning.

I had this problem about 12 months ago, I tried lubricating the sliding wedges on both sides of the tailgate with silicon spray and other light oils but it was only when I tried vaselene did it stop the rattle - and it's still quiet!

You people need to know that your advice is still helping owners new to the D3.

I thought I was in for a big bill.

This must be one of the quickest fixes out there.

Thanks.
