D3 auto box failing to let loose, then tension jerk

My D3 is a 2005 MY with 82,000 KM with proper service at LR. I am experiencing the auto box transmission fail to disengage when coming to a stop, it continues to hang on, then only let’s fully loose right before a stop. This occurs during low speed and you can feel it finally let loose. Then as I pull away from a roll - not a full stop I am getting what I would describe as a loose chain feel, then tension up and jerk. It’s the same sensation as riding a bicycle where the chain has gotten loose somehow and then all of a sudden after a partial pedal it catches with tension. The overall feeling is there is slack in the drivetrain if that makes sense. Anybody have ideas on what could be the problem?

Does the shifter link feel tight or getting stuck when you are shifting from P to D?
Have you tried putting it into N when on a stop as a red light then shifting back to D?
When's the last time you did the Transmission fluid and pan service?

My D3 has the 6 speed auto box.

Shifting linkage and/or mechanism hasn't changed, simply feels like there is slack in the drivetrain.

I changed the transmission fluid about 20,000 km ago.

Check the prop shaft.

There was a recall to update the transmission firmware - search for transmission shunt.

D3 went in for service and the transfer box was reflashed. Symptoms are about 50% less. Thank you for the ideas, anyone else have any more?

What fault codes do you have? Although your mileage is low, I would be thinking about one or more of the solenoids in the auto box not working as they should. But I would expect that to show as faults. This assumes the is no mechanical reason re propshaft etc.

I'm afraid you have got to live with it, it is otherwise known as the California stop Very Happy .Gap will supply you with the latest firmware available for the box for a small fee, in my case it has not cured it, but others have had better results and it does have other subtle benefits to make gear change smoother, more pleasurable and more economical depending on your driving style. If you use sport mode in auto the box does not engage first gear when slowing down Thumbs Up

It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
