how long to turn over (TDV6)

Hi All,

Ive just swapped by TD5 for an O7 TDV6, 90k on it. I'm trying to get a good understanding if its slow to start. When turn the key. its takes a 1-1.5 seconds to start. Is this too long? I have given plugs time to warm (is this even needed any longer)

I know what I'm asking is a subjective question - but this seems to take a fraction longer to start than my TD5 (admittedly I had changed the starter motor in the TD5 about 20k ago)

I'm sure I'm being over cautious - but is this a warning sign for something on the way out? I'm testing battery and alternator tomorrow, but I'm pretty sure they are OK.

Thanks for input

R

Mine is almost instant, even without using the glow plugs at this time of year - approaching 160k miles

Can't remember how that compared to my last TD5 defender I'm afraid

Could be sign of worn injectors. Mine went from this:

to this:

with 6 new injectors. You may well need your injector balance figures to rule in/out. Thumbs Up

I also recently came over to the D3 from the D2 and the D3 starts a lot quicker, instant in my opinion . my D2 didn't get used a great deal and I had to keep it on trickle charge or it would struggle to start at this time of year even after the new battery , the wife only did short journeys so it never got back what it used to fire her up.

Both my old D2 & my current D3 start as soon as the starter's engaged this time of year. Mine's on 145k & it had a new battery 15k ago. I think more than one of my glow plugs has gone though as when it's really cold it takes a bit longer (I tend to give the glow plugs a couple of goes before starting it when it's really cold)

Mine was the same. The original battery was OK but it took a while to fire up. Fitted a new long life battery from Halfords and now the old girl fires up instantly.

I fitted the new battery as the old one died after leaving the radio on for an hour or so while I was fitting a new compressor.

thanks for all the replies, tested the battery and when running charge is a good 14.5V - but as soon as engine is switched off it drops to 12V - so I suspect new battery is the place to start

having read old thread seems the EA1000 Exide Premium Car Battery 017TE is the clever thinking - that still hold true or are there other suggestions?

thanks again

That's certainly the most cost effective and high power solution. Thumbs Up

I'm over in Ireland 14-18th October if you want the codes and live values looking at. Or remaps etc. Thumbs Up
