Front Caliper Question

Do the pistons have to be wound back when changing the front pads ?

Not so much wound back as pushed back. You can buy a tool for the job from AF.

Wife's mx5 rear calliper piston needs to be wound back as the hand brake mechanism is an integral part of the calliper design. Tool can both push and wind where required

No, they just need to be carefully pressed back into the calpier...I take the top off the brake fluid reservoir and keep an eye on the fluid level as i ease the pistons home.
