Air Con Woes...again...sorry

Guys Apologies in advance for a lengthy post

I have the old issue with rear air con on my 06 Disco 3. Now I cannot blank as need the rear air con for the half dozen dogs we have Embarassed Rolling Eyes so need to keep them cool when going out with the tintent.

After a local indy (who also is supposidly a "specialist" in aircon) has had several "attempts" to fix including replacing one of the genuine connections for a union with high pressure olives on the pipes that run middle (through the sill area) to the middle rear pipe if that makes sense! The aircon still leaks. It passes the vac test and once regassed lasts for approx 2 weeks before losing gas. It has had the usual dies in and apart from aroun the original leak area nothing else is showing.

Out of desperation I sent it into the local dealers in Derby for a diagnosis as my indy ran out of ideas. After having the car for a whole day...with absolutely no communication and only after 2 hours of us trying to contact them did we finally get to talk to someone who basically asked where we had the pipe connection replaced and the cheapest option would be to replace the seals and regass if it passed the vac test! Shocked

Now to my mind they havnt done a chuff to the vehicle and kept the car until it was too late for us to collect that same day and just wanted to replace the O rings and charge us £170+VAT for doing it in a couple of days time!

Well my answer to that was Censored Censored Censored Censored Censored how can a couple of £5 O rings and gas come to £170 + VAT with NO guarantee of fixing the issue! Also how can you replace olives and the connection with O rings was beyond me....

Needless to say we wasnt charged for the "diagnosis" but given a quote of £1755 to replace all 4 of the pipes "just incase" and regass Big Cry Big Cry Big Cry

So now I am throwing myself onto your mercy and general wealth of information as to

A) Get the aircon repaired (I know I will need at least 2 pipes)
B) Anyone in the locale (Derby) that could do the job...we are willing to travel if required
C) Anyone in the Locale that could do the "Flexi pipe repair"....again willing to travel
D) Anyone that wants a D3 with no rear aircon Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

Willing to pay a reasonable amount (£500-600 see we are serious!) but need something done ASAP so we can make use of this fine weather (although at this moment in time wellies or waders are more use)

So is the original leak area still leaking or did they not clean the dye after fixing the original leak?

Have they pressure tested with (Oxygen Free) Nitrogen?

I spent quite a lot on aircon work last year. In brief :

Front to rear pipe
Replaced compressor
7 hours labour to fit & investigate.

This was 11 months (10000 miles) ago.

All good so far. Garage said there could be further issues with the heater box? Wallet was empty at that point though Big Cry

Thumbs Up

Hi,

I'm in Derby too Thumbs Up

My Disco had a rear aircon leak fixed by a little independent air-con man down Market Harborough way in 2013 by the previous owner. I believed this repair involved replacement of some corroded pipes, anyway 3 years later the system still works.

If you like I could dig out his invoice from my paperwork folder later and pass on his contact details?

Cheers
Daniel

Hi Daniel

Thanks for getting back to me.

Would be good if you could make at least a decent starting point!

Cheers

As far as I am aware the dye was cleaned as far as possible and this residue was the only sign of any leakage.

I understand they did both a pressure and a vac test and the system passd both!!

Hence the reason they are stumped Shocked

DLS at Wirksworth near Matlock have recently renewed my rear air con pipes charging around £440 including the anti bacteria treatment. I've used them for servicing and repairs for the past couple of years. LR independents, far cheaper than the stealers and they have free courtesy cars.

If its losing gas its got a leak simple as, they need to pressurise the system and get the squirty soapy water bottle out, using the human ear alone is not good enough, it took some finding on mine, the leak was microscopic, but the alloy pipe was pin holed under passenger rear door, new pipe 150 odd quid and regas and its been fine for 12 months.
