No possiblity of valve failure
Reduced engine wear
No clogging of the MAP sensor
Marginally better fuel consumption
Reduced particulate matter emission

On a side note, but on the same subject regarding egr blankin stuff. I have heard you can drill a tiny hole in both blankin plates to "fool" the ecu on modern ish vehicles that monitors some sort of back pressure, but if they have pizo ceramic something of a sensor, this cant be fooled ???

What he said
Plus it can reduce the engine lag when coming up to a junction, foot off the accelerator = EGR open, go to accelerate and you wait for the EGR valve to close.
You'll still have gearbox lag, but every little helps. Bodsys Brake Bible

EGR blanking and Gearbox
I blanked my EGRs (which were failing at the time, engine fault light on) 3 months ago. No remapping done to engine or anything else. I have been experiencing an issue whereby on longer journeys the gearbox trips out to F mode when I rev too hard (2500-3000) between 5th and 6th gear. Switching off and restarting clears the fault and then things are back to normal.
Can the absence/signals from the EGRs be affecting the gearbox transmission which misreads the engine loading etc?
I also have a little judder between 2nd and 3rd at low revs/30mph when trying to pull away.
Are both related / can these be diagnosed just from fault codes? I don't have any code reader, just wanted to be armed with a few facts before visiting an indie garage.
Vehicle has done 153k, gearbox flushed at about 125k.

If your D3 is 2007 and earlier, you don't need to do any ECU modification or remapping. If the check engine / MIL indicator didn't come on after blanking the EGRs, then you must have a 2007 or earlier.
As far as your transmission goes, I'd be surprised if the EGRs could even remotely effect the transmission. I did extensive research on the EGRs before blanking mine (2008), without a single mention of any resulting problems, in the engine or elsewhere.
Re. diagnostics: I bought an IIDtool a few months back, has paid for itself already with regard to enabling me to DIY switch the air compressor and apply the EGR remap (reqd for my '08 ), not to mention giving me some insight into the car's general operation. I don't know what the transmission reports, I suggest contacting one or all of the diagnostic tool manufacturers.

Thanks Ben
I have an 07, which I think does normally need a remap to prevent the engine light comimg on.
Sounds like the gearbox issue is completely separate. Any experience of the 5th to 6th issue I am having?

Touch wood, my gearbox seems to be ok; no issues at all that I know of.
