Boot liner advice

Hi All,

I bought a boot liner from UK Custom Covers a few weeks back, seems ok though a few ill fitting areas of the Boot in the D4 but after a very short time the bit that covers the lower load door has a very thin covering at the edge and has already ripped after taking a heavy 'ish' load from the boot.

I wrote to UK custom covers and they are just interested in flogging me a whole new load system and telling me that to replace the one small piece would cost as much as a new cover - basically i don't think they can be bothered to deal with a customer service issue or help out and i've definately been fobbed off...

SO....

I may well look to replace the whole cover, or just the load door, do any of you have experience with other manufacturers covers such as Hatchbag, or LR's own cover? - quality, durability, ease of use when splitting rear seats etc?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Toby

Have used Hatchbag load liners since the late 1980's in everything from a 205GTi to a Freelander and always found them to be up to the job. Will be ordering one for the D4 in due course.

Have a look at Boot Buddy. It's slightly different - semi rigid - and IMO better than the flexible ones. Quality is good, though - as often seems the case these days - customer service is iffy.

Had a few different ones in different cars but by far the best so far is the Hatchbag, good fit and durable but a bit pricy, if you're going to have the car for a while then its worth the extra - plus you can always sell it on here later Thumbs Up

ps Surely if the one you bought has developed a fault after such a short time you will have some come back on the firm - assuming its normal use etc? Confused

Thanks All, Hatchbag and Bootbuddy will be getting a look for sure.

Its not that the Custom Covers one is 'Faulty' but rather the way it sits on the lower boot section, if you can imagine when you are pulling a heavy box from the boot, you pull it slightly over the edge of the lower door in order to get a good grip underneath - almost sliding it off and its this part of the cover that catches being quite thin. Subsequently i have ripped a small tear in mine - just annoying as i've only had it a few weeks.

The Disco as standard has quite a large plastic edge surrounding the boot door carpet i assume for this reason. I suggested they could make the lower door section with a wider edging bit, in addition to the velcro straps that are sewed to the main cover which loop round the headrest poles to hold it.

It says clearly on the instructions to undo these prior to pushing the seats forward - thats OK until your neighbour who doesn't know this puts the seats down and they rip off.... i also suggested that these tabs should velcro to the cover, that way if you accidentally put the seats forward they dont rip but just detach to be re-attached Smile

Naturally they offered no thanks for my suggestions and just wanted to flog me a new cover. Admittedly they offered a new whole system half price but i only need that one bit. Too much hassle to supply a small bit i suppose.

I shall do some research once this one fails in other places which i'm sure it will.....

Cheers all!

just spoke to Rachael at Hatchbag and they were delighted to sell me just a single component of their cover system - in my case, lower tailgate for £33 delivered.

9 day leadtime so will keep fingers crossed its good quality, once the rest of the cover fails as i'm sure it will then i'll order the rest from Hatchbag Thumbs Up

Cheers!

Well my Hatchbag tailgate cover was bought in 2006. It's still going strong, although the hemmed edges have frayed so I covered them in tape.

The Hatchbag I bought for my Freelander in 2002 is going strong still after outliving the original car and putting up with all manner of loads from bales of hay through muddy wet spaniels, carcass boxes and various bits bought for or removed from the other green oval machines that have been in the fleet over the years.

Both the hatchbag and the UK custom covers are very good products. Comparing them without considering price is not really fair as the hatchbag comes in at nearly double the price.

I have a uk Custom cover and I am happy with it, my bro has a hatchbag fitted in a allroad and I would say they are probably a superior product but again they should be at close to twice the price.

Thought I'd update here and Ryan52, totally agree in as much as I think they are both good and that is reflected in the ukcustom covers one being half the cost - my main issue was their customer service to a returning customer was poor in my experience. It was my fault it tore, just wanted to buy a new bit and they weren't interested really.

The hatchback is undoubtedly a stronger and better made product and yes twice the cost but then I forked out good money on the car so wouldn't have an issue spending good money on a decent boot liner too - again, my issue is I clearly didn't research enough before hand or come and ask you lovely people first. Thumbs Up

So all in all its sorted and I'm a happy boy again!

Cheers to all that replied.

Chaps, on the Hatchbag, how do the rear window sill flaps fix on? Are they secure?

Thinking of trying one out, the LR load protector I've had for a few years is a bit worse for wear...

Here's something I found recently.

I bought a boot liner off a member here and have yet to fit it but had a load to go to the tip and
as I had a builders Hippo 1 ton / 1 cubic yard bag in the garage, thought I'd give that a try and it's a perfect fit for for the back of a D3/4.

Almost 3 feet high so protects the sides and for £18, well worth a go.

Available in most DIY stores.
