Evening chaps, not been on here often as I am a defender man and usually reside over on Defender2.net but the wife has a disco 3, a lovely vehicle which I love to drive (when she lets me ).
Today when moving her car to allow someone to get their car out she was approached by a chap from the office accross the road and he said to her that he could hear that ( in her words ) one of the downpipes was leaking and she had to be careful as she could blow a head gasket if she didn't get it looked at (he claims he used to work for LR), I appreciate his advise but saying that to my mrs is like telling her the engine is about to catastophically implode and she doesn't want to drive it now.... Like I said, I am a defender bloke and know VERY little about the Disco 3, is there more than one downpipe? big job to change? expensive? and what are the chances of the engine/head gasket going boom?
Sorry for all the questions
thanks in advance
Mike

I have never heard of a blown exhaust taking out a head gasket from any blow. That's the good news bad news is it's probably the cross over (link pipe) pipe that runs round the back of the block and is a pig to work on. You need to get it checked out to confirm exactly where the blow is from or if you've got one at all as one man's sayso from across the street doesn't really count

I agree, I'm not an expert but sounds rubbish.
...but if any area other than back boxes need doing I take it to the shop - I hate doing anything on an exhaust!
Why don't you tell your wife he was looking for a reason to talk to her! Probably tries to use it as a pick up line.

Thanks for the tips, I didn't believe it would cause any damage but just wanted to make sure so the Mrs could still drive it until I got it sorted, I did tell her that the guy was probably trying to chat her up.
I've booked it in to the local garage down the road as I know fine well I'll end up snapping studs off and I can't be bothered with that, as I would be working outside.
Thanks again for the input chaps.

Thanks for the offer ST53VEN, much appreciated, if you were within collection range I would take it but seeing as I've already offered the job to my local chap I will pass
