Suspected front diff (No - now diagnosed as transfer box)
Hi all, this is my first post (with this account anyway).
I've recently bought a bit of a beaten up D3, not horrendous, but it needs a little tlc to get back on good form. Now then, I highly suspect the front diff is on its way, if not gone already.
The symptom is the obvious whining noise from a stand which gets worse on acceleration. I haven't tried putting it in off road height and reversed in full lock yet but I'm almost convinced that is the issue.
Now my question/s;
I am aware it's an expensive fix, but can anyone recommend me anyone around Teesside/North East;
What advice would you give at this point?
Thanks in advance folks, and hope to speak to you all soon.Thanks,
Adam

Thanks RBP, I'll give a few of those guys a shout.
Mr Kington, I haven't tried that but I will do tomorrow. I'd prefer a bearing to the diff, but, she is 10 years old and looks it too. So I'm not going to be surprised if the diff wants replacing.
Question for those who have done their own, is it something I can do at home? My mechanical knowledge/experience isn't my issue, however I've never changed a diff therefor I'm not sure if I have all the gear for the job. For instance, is it a ramp job or can I do it at home?Thanks,
Adam

Don't assume it's the diff, on mine it was the 2-year-old replacement wheel bearing
Pretty over the moon when I discovered that!

As Martin says - start with the cheaper option.
Had an horrendous racket on mine recently - had the front up and could find no play at all in the wheels but it was really was an outrageous noise. All but convinced myself it was major cost time.
Talking it through with herself she told me to try the cheapest fix first - so one £90 Timken hub and two hours later and all is fine with the world
When I took the offending hub and span it by hand it sounded like a bag of nuts in a tin can.....I see no ships........

Thanks Martin and SpiderBaby, much appreciated.
I'm going to have a look today and see if I can get to the bottom of it. Then get it booked in if I can't do it myself.Thanks,
Adam

How did you decide which hub to change if none were showing play?!

Took the wheel off, took the disc / brake etc off and used the 'Mark One Ear' up against it
I had a 50% chance of being right first time and, as it happened, I was... I see no ships........

For me the one making the horrendous grinding noise when the wheel was spun round was the giveaway 06 D3 SE / 15 LR D90 XS SW / 88 LR 90 Td5 / 68 BMW 2000 ti

I had the other end of the scale. 64k miles and knackered front diff. Mine got noisy on the over run. Managed to find brand new genuine diff from Island 4X4 at less than a recon one. Remember to buy the extension tube for the offside driveshaft. The bearing was knackered in there as well. It's not a lot of money for the part .

Yup no harm in starting with the cheaper bits.
Thought my diff might be knackered but had a wheel bearing changed today and the noise has totally disappeared. There wasn't any play in the bearing top-bottom or side-side, just a growing growl which got louder with speed.

I didn't get chance to have a look today. As per usual, a million and one jobs got in the way!
The whining noise doesn't sound like its a bearing, if that makes sense? It's a very strange pitched whine and difficult to explain. Anyhow, I'm going to get it booked in somewhere just to diagnose the issue.Thanks,
Adam

Mine obviously hadn't gone quite as far as Martin's - there was no major noise on turning the wheels by hand.
But once I could get the screwdriver and thumb on the hub I could hear it.
Mind you, I am also suffering the effects of age on my hearing..... I see no ships........
