So my D3 developed a rumble from the front whilst in the south of France this summer. It was quite hard to reproduce initially but I narrowed it down to slowish left hand sweeping turns. I've no idea how long it had been doing it but the left hand turn roundabouts in France had suddenly made it noticeable. I checked the tyres and checked the bearings by hand without any obvious issues. I'd already changed all the trans and diff oils before we'd left. In any event, I changed both wheel bearings/hubs when we got back but the rumble remains. I've recently had a new clutch fitted and in the past 12 months I've had new air struts on the front, new lower arms, new discs and pads and it went through its mot in July without any issues or advisories. I'm out of ideas and I'm thinking CV joint or front diff?
I'm planning on changing to a D4 in Jan/Feb and I was going to just see how it goes and p/X it in but the rumble appears to be getting worse. It's not a constant rumble when turning, it's a rotational on/off rubbing type rumble and it's now noticeable when turning left, generally sweeping lefts not 90 degree lefts but at a much wider speed range. It is also now detectable when crawling in slow moving traffic in a straight line which it wasn't before. This evening, and I may be mistaken, but it felt like the car had started to wander a bit at motorway speeds. An almost sudden wander or very slight change of direction even while the steering wheel was straight and road was flat. So now I don't think I can wait but I'd be really grateful for any input on this. I think I'm going to be using my Defender for day to day now until this is sorted and the problem is compounded in that I haven't yet found a good LR specialist nearby to me as yet.
It's a D3 manual with nearly new pirellis, 150k now.

My first thought would be to check your wheel bearings, especially as the rumble is getting worse, and with the car wondering

Mine developed a rumble and although you could not notice it by checking yourself, the wheel bearings were on their way out.

As above, sounds like osf wheel bearing
When they were replaced before, was it with Timken or Britpart replacements? New gearbox & TC, 3 x front wheel bearings, belts changed, new oil pump, new battery, new rear prop, new front prop, new front diff, front arb refurbed, front cv boot kit, egr blank and BAS software patch, full rear suspension / drivelive rebuild, new front arms, LED trailer light fix, split charge.
Never had a 107, 90 or 127, but have had most of the rest!

More than likely the wheel bearing, i couldnt feel play in mine by hand but it was worn and swapping it over cured the noise
I could have sworn it was the drivers side but it was actually the passenger side and the sound travelled through the chassis
Changed both corners and ran silently
Whilst most state Timken bearings which i agree are top notch, i used cheaper parts, £34 each bearing hub) with 2 year warranty. If they wear, they are covered and i will get a replacement which takes half hour to refit ....................................................................................................
If my wife ever sells my stuff for what she thinks I paid for them, you lot are gonna get some bargains!

Thanks for all your responses and PM's
The wheel bearings are not the issue as I had just replaced them, actually to cure the rumble which I was initially convinced was the wheel bearings too.
Turns out the 'wandering' was actually down to lorry tyre ruts in the near side lane of the M4, I Just couldn't see them in the dark.
The rumble was actually the rear propshaft. Worn out with too much movement. Replaced yesterday by Harfords Chippenham. Rumble now all gone.
Hopefully this may be of help to others because the rumble I was getting and the circumstances in which it materialised said wheel bearing all day long. However, with car on a ramp, the prop could be moved up and down by hand at the trans end by a good 1.5". New genuine LR one fitted.
Thanks again for your replies. Discovery 3 2.7TDV6 Man
