Engine Shutdown & Special programs Off message
"Engine System Failure" coupled with "Low Coolant Level" and "Special programs off" popping up simultaneously is what's ailing me and my 2008 Diesel HSE
As per other threads on here, when ESF pops up it goes into power down-shut down mode that sorts itself out when you switch the engine on and off (not ideal when in a Zurich City tunnel I found out recently .
The coolant level definitely isn't low and it seems to now come on every time I drive, and I don't have any special programs on that I know of!
So I think other threads have narrowed this ESF problem down to turbo or intercooler pipe? I recently had the EGR valves done so don't think it's that..... Garage recently charged me 500 to run a check and take it for a long run (thanks for that). They said the ESF probably was the particulate filter and it would regenerate when taken for a long spin on the motorway. Which I have done and doesn't seem to help..... Recently done a service so all the filters etc. have just been changed.
Any thoughts?
Cheers!

You could have 3 faults. Sticky turbo linkage, porous coolant float and battery on it's last legs.

Low coolant level may be due to porous float giving erronious readings. I would be wondering if the low coolant reading is tricking the engine management system into a fail safe mode before 'damage' is done. Special progs would include Low ratio gearing and possible high engine revs, so OFF is another safety mode. Dave

Yes, terrain response system. The Special Progs Off is a common message when the battery is on its last legs. To be sure though best to have tea leaves/codes read.

£37 code reader just ordered on ebay.
I like the reasoning the low coolant level issues could be causing it to think there is a problem.Have had in date order from 1990: Austin Maxi 1750, Ford Escort Mark III, Volvo 440 Turbo, Scuby Impreza WRX, MGTF160, Nissan 350Z, Electric Bike, Alfa Romeo Spider, Nissan NV200 Evalia.... and now a Disco3HSE

Any easy/cheap/Macgyver fixes for said porous float?

OK, I give up she is shutting down every time I drive now so I am taking her into the Doctor on Monday with a list of things for them to check from you good people on here
Incidentally, if this happens to you, here is my silly suggestion:
Hit the hazards as soon as the engine system shuts down into limp mode, flip her into neutral, flick the ignition off and on and then pop it back into Drive and continue on to your destination
Warning: 1. Practice this first going slowly before doing it at motorway speeds. Whilst it could be a very dodgy maneuver that is sure to be illegal, stopping on a motorway is not always a good idea either!
Warning 2. Only click your auto box one-click up as two is reverse. Not good at 70mph. Obvious, but when it happens you want to be able to shift into neutral without looking.
Warning 3. Before doing this, check your steering wheel lock doesn't come on if you are in Neutral and you switch off the ignition. Mine doesn't come on and I assume nobody's will, but safety first etc.
Will post the results of Mondays operation of course
Cheers folks!

2 out of three Sir!
Garage just called and they are changing the coolant overflow tank and the battery is indeed only showing 9.7V
I gave him the list from you lot and when he called he also confirmed that the Intercooler pipes are split (on my list from another similar Engine Shutting down thread) so initially we are doing the pipes and the coolant tank before I splash $550 (?!?) on a new battery. Are batteries really that pricey? He said they are now a new Gel battery....but still, that's just crazy expensive.
