The cut out areas on the trim panels are marked on the inside of the panel. Never take life too seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.

I have very limited technical skills and managed to do a first class job. As said a be the cut outs are marked. Slow and steady wins the race. If you have access to a 'pit' it's all the easier too.
Worth tidying up the sills and protecting them when you have the trims off too

Check out direct 4x4, they make a variety of side steps that don't require you to cut (or even remove) the sill trims. I've got a set on.
