It depends on your budget.
If you can push to a 3.0 8 speed. Do it

The d3 engine in d4 commercial guise only. My view is that there was a good reason they stopped producing it on a d4 and moved everything over to the 3.0 6 and then 8 speed.

Is it only available as a commercial?
I would like a d4 but I'm a big manual fan, never got on well working with a Auto box and never enjoyed driving them as much.
PeteIID, webasto software and workshop facility's available.

That was my understanding yes. Early D4 commercial was a 2.7 manual and it was the only trim that had this option/engine. Rough guess that this was phased out late 2010 but not exact on dates.Stolen - D4 Loire Blue

I also always went for a manual box as I wasn't comfortable with an auto however I now have the D4 in auto and wish I had moved to one a lot earlier. You really have to drive one for a while to fully understand the benefits.

For years I couldn't get on with any autos. I had a early D2 auto from work, it was terrible always changing gear at the wrong moment and revving at the slightest hill. I then had a D3 auto. It was a revelation . I can normally make it change gear exactly when I want with just the throttle. An 8 speed even better. Suggest you try one and see.

I have a 2.7 d4 commercial manual
It is excellent but if I had the cash I would rather have a 8 speed as they are really nice to drive.
