as to the question why use hand brake before park
http://myautomatictransmission.com/transmission-parking-pawl.htm

it should be added release foot brake so load is on hand brake before moving to park.

I avoid park when offroading.
a few years ago had to pull back on a jeep stopped on a steep downslope for a pic as they could not get out of park.
It is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.

Interesting one, my first automatic was a 1996 3.5 V8 Rover SD1 from 1996, since then I have driven a wide range of automatics from Volvo, Land Rover, Mazda, Porsche and others. I have never used the hand brake, at traffic lights I let it 'hang' in drive and when I stop the car to park it I engage 'park' in the auto gearbox and have never had a 'park' related gearbox failure. Since Land Rover abandoned the transmission handbrake I have assumed that 'park' was the safer option as it locked both axles rather than the EPB which only locks the rear brakes.

I noticed the other day that if you have it in D and press Stop with your foot on the break, it'll go into park automatically.

All the eight speeds do that, even early ones without stop/start,

Yeah, that's the one...

Just so I'm not causing future issues, what's LR's "correct" procedure? Seems like there are 3 options:

1. Brake to a stop, engage parking brake, then switch the engine off
2. Brake to a stop, then switch to "P" while your foot is still on the brakes, then switch the engine off
3. Brake to a stop, then just switch the engine off

Can't remember when I was told this or even who told me.....
1- Apply foot brake
2-transmission to N
3- handbrake on
4- Release foot brake
5- transmission to P
I started off with nothing and Ive still got most of it left.

I don't think you can select P from N without the brake pressed.

On flat ground I just use P - on a hill I put the parking brake on first then select P to avoid loading the gearbox parking pawl.

You are right, you need to reapply the foot brake once the handbrake has taken the load and then shift from N to P. The procedure posted by Comanche is how I do it, especially if its on any sort of incline. If its flat im less fussy.

Switch off in D, open door, listen to the car beeping that it is in drive, screen says D then P, lock, walk away.

I don't use the EPB at home as the car can be parked for a few days but I use it when I am out and about so that it remembers what to do given it's an MOT requirement that it works.
