Oil in Brake Booster
I know there have been many threads on the D3 brake recall but thought I would post my recent findings (along with a couple of pics) and solicit opinion.
My car has had the recall but I have subsequently found oil in the pipe. I contacted Pete at LR Customer Service (on here) for advice as I wanted to see what the chances were of LR providing the new required parts as I was happy to fit myself. A long shot of course and the answer was the expected official “You need to take to a LR approved dealer for investigation”.
As I have the car in two parts (to complete other maintenance) I obviously cannot take the car into any approved dealer, although it would be amusing to see what reaction I would get if I turned up with just “the lid” on a trailer . Therefore, I thought I would strip out the Booster and Master cylinder and check this myself. The results below speak for themselves.
So my dilemma now is:-
1) Do I buy new parts myself and fit (circa £400 for Booster, cylinder and Vacuum pump)
2) Put the car back together with faulty brake system and then take to LR and keep fingers crossed they replace at their cost (risk is they don’t and I am back to replacing myself anyway).
The logical answer would be to take the parts into a dealer as proof of fault, then have LR agree that they do need to be replaced and just provide the required parts, but obviously we do not live in a logical world so I know that will just get me short shrift from any LR dealer.
I am not convinced that even replacing new parts fixes the underlying root cause so I was wondering, does anyone know if the later D4 3.0 Vacuum pump would fit/work on a D3? I presume LR have fixed the issue in the newer pump as D4s have not had the recall.
Also, does anyone know if there is any difference between the Petrol Booster and the TDV6 Booster? They have different part numbers (SJJ500090 vs SJJ500010) but seem very similar.
Cheers

Has it also had the rework pipework fitted (although that doesn't seem to completely stop the issue).
Istr disco Mikey fitted the Rrs supercharger brake booster, it has a greater boost capacity so easier braking. Bodsys Brake Bible

Hi Bodsy
Yep, I have the "Heath Robinson" pipe contraption fitted (during first recall) and you are right, it doesn't stop the problem. I think the root cause seems to be back in the Vacuum Pump itself.
I did a trawl of the part numbers for the pump and there are several iterations but the design doesn't seem to change materially, even for the new D4 (V)BAXXXX chassis numbers (Part number LR023936).
I was wondering whether this would fit on a D3. See pics below of the differences.
LR013526 - Original vacuum pump
LR023936 - Latest vacuum pump
The new D4s don't have a recall so I assume the change in pump from Bosch to FoMoCo did the trick. Maybe a D4 owner can confirm whether the D4s come with the "Heath Robinson" additional pipework from factory?
Regarding the Booster, I suspected that the Booster for the RRSport (and perhaps D3 V8 ) would provide better boost so I will fit one of those as they do seem to be the same fitment.
I doubt many have changed Vacuum pumps themselves but I'd welcome any thoughts on the above part numbers.

I am in the process of booking my d3 in to get the brakes fixed through the recall because it has never been done, the previous owner only went to an independent except for the cam belt.
What should I expect them to change and fix.
And thanks to the forum I found out about the recall last week and thought I would end up with a bill to repair the problem

If you are going in for the recall they will check for oil in the pipe that comes out of the booster and connects to the vacuum pump.
If there is no oil present they will just replace the existing pipework with a new modified contraption.
If there is oil present then they "should" replace the booster, pump and master cylinder.
However, as can be seen from my pictures above, neither option seems to solve the underlying problem, I had the recall done several years ago.Disco3 project

The recall done several years ago didn't include the option of the upgraded vacuum pump then, hence the reason why so many of the previously "updated" booster pipe recalls are failing again. I don't know when around 2010MY the new vacuum pump was specified for the production vehicles, but certainly no 3.0TDV6's should be affected.
Sadly, only the later vacuum pump can fix this problem, everything else is just masking the symptoms. You need to be insistent with LR Service that the parts are inspected and corrected under the original recall(Safety Recall P017), which means that you should not have to bear the costs. That means taking the vehicle to a "competent authority", which means a LR dealership. An indy like me is useless for this job (if you wanted it covered under P017), hence I (successfully) pointed one of my customers, with a full report, at her nearest dealer.

Hi dreynolds10 (sorry about that!),
Any further progress on changing the D3 pump for the D4 pump? I have had the P017 recall done (six years ago), but the same problem is back as well. I'd like to fix it for more than just another six years!
