EGR Blanking - A Warning...
Most of us use a steel plate to blank the EGR valves, but there has been discussion about using a 2p piece to blank...
These pictures came from a car that a family member had just bought.
I went to see the car with him, and it was plugged in. As expected on an 05 car, there were EGR valve issues. However, there were no blanking plates visible, and the car drove reasonably well, though the live data showed the valves as stuck at 13% each
The car was brought up the road and left with me, as it needed a bit of work. While doing the cambelts, I decided to blank the valves with some stainless plates I had made up. When the pipes came off, this is what was found...

When the throttle housing was removed from the engine, the coins from both sides fell out...

Here is one side compared to a new coin...

So, if you have blanked your valves with a 1p or 2p coin, I suggest you remove them, and quickly
This could have ended very badly

I've never understood the enthusiasm some have had for sticking in a bit of metal in a pipe in the hope that it stays there. All that eroded steel will have gone somewhere....

I have to admit that I first used a 2p bit to get me home from France, when my 2008 D3 broke down. I did it on the advice of my dealer (who I had phoned for advice)
I had the valves replaced on return, but never thought this could happen over time.
Is it heat erosion, or chemical?

I assumed people put the 2p where it meets the manifold ie where you would put the blanking plate?
I'm guessing there must have been some gas flowing past them for them to erode like that.IID PRO

It's rare that fixing a Disco is cheaper than other cars but a 5th of the price of a 5 series....IID PRO

Got the steel plates in mine, any pics/observations of how they have lasted long term?

Yep, there has to be gas flowing past to erode the steel. The same thing can happen with incorrectly secured blanking plates.
