Help, tin tent electrics tripped. Can't reset RCD - Sorted
Last night the RCD tripped on the left hand switch of the RCD and charger panel thingy, it's labelled charger,lights and water heater. It won't reset. The other side for fridge and sockets is fine.
I've had all the fuses out and still won't reset. Turned off all the electrics, lights and sockets and still the same.
Fridge and sockets still work so I can still keep my beer cold, so all is not lost.
I did hear some 'crackling coming from the RCD or charger and a bit of burning smell just before it tripped.
Anybody any ideas where to start? I'm not the best when it comes to tin tent electrics

The battery charger might have blown

Could be element in water heater or melt down in charger. See if you can disconnect those easily and try the trip again.
Do them individually so you can see whats causing the fault.

I had a similar problem when the element in my water heater burnt out. I go with what dantheman suggests.Man with no D3 anymore, but cant leave the forum....how sad.

The water heater wasn't on, im tending to think it's the battery charger too, because when I had all the fuses out it was still tripping. I've got it all in bits now so not much chance of me turning the power on again just yet.

When your RCD is tripping you will need to totally disconnect whatever you think is the cause completely. Either take the plug out of the socket or disconnect the live and neutral from the fuse board. Sounds like the charger though.
If the electrics in your 'van are anything like my Bailey (which uses the same control box) every electrical item is connected somewhere by an in-line connector, so you can disconnect individual items without having to resort to unscrewing individual wires. Unless the fault is inside the bits of cable from the control box to the connectors, that is. Which if a mouse has been eating the wiring is entirely possible!

The one on the far left is not a RCD, it is a MCB which is overload / dead short protection only. the breaker far right is your RCD,
Dead short - battery charger failed would trip the MCB.26 and on the 4th LR..

No idea, just broken. Easy to replace though, just 8 screws and two plug in connectors

Nope, I've still got the broken one. Haven't binned it yet. I'll take it apart later

I had a similar battery charger failure on our 2007 Bailey Pageant series 6, about 18 months ago, the charger has an internal cooling fan which failed and then fried the circuit board. Our caravan is probably used more intensively than most as I have lived in it for some significant periods when working away but I think the problem is fairly common if you look at some of the tintent forums.
