Ticking noise from the engine

Hello all

The engine in my Disco has developed a ticking noise that isn't there when it's cold but starts once it's warmed up - it sounds like a dodgy hydraulic cam follower in the old ford CVH engines

I remove the fan belt last night to check all the pulleys which were ok, I started the engine with the belt removed and the tick was still there

It had an oil change approx 3k ago done by the dealer and it's done 132k

Any ideas - change the oil again?

Does the 2,7d have any history of cam follower issues?

Thanks

My 07 ticks and its got the EGR's blanked and emulators fitted, but that doesn't necessarily rule out the erg.

I changed the oil and fitted a genuine LR filter today and it's still ticking + some injector cleaner added to the fuel

I have already blanked the EGRs and the wiring is disconnected, but the passenger side valve (the side of the ticking) rattles when backing off the throttle. My plan at some point is to remove it and remove the internal parts and refit it

Whilst in our dealers yesterday getting a filter a LR Tech said that it would probably be an injector rather than a follower and he mentioned that it could be the egr - in someways looking at the price of the injectors I hope it's a follower

Time to start eliminating things one by one I suppose and as cheaply as possible Sad

The cam belt was starting to shred - it was changed 18 months ago at 109,000

And the question is: why the hell it only sounds with warm engine and not with cold...this shreded part of the belt must be hitting the cover equally on cold or warm...

Mystery.

I would say the more important question is what made the belt shred?

After finding the fault I was surprised that it wasn't ticking all a time, but Initially it was only ticking when warm but it developed into doing it all a time

Going to check all the pulleys and tensioners today to see why it was running out off line

I checked all the pulleys for burrs, sharp and rough edges and there wasn't anything as far as I could make out, the only thing I could find was a slight bit of play in both the idler pulleys which I replaced with new ones today.

So it's either been poorly fitted or damaged during installation or it was the play in the pulleys causing it to run off center

I fitted a new belt and idler kit this morning, centralised the belts on all the pulleys and turned the engine over by hand then fired it up and ran it for 30 - 60 secs and the belt ran true on the pulleys - put it all back together and there was no clicking noise Very Happy Thumbs Up

I will keep an eye on it over the next few weeks, fingers crossed that it's all ok as we are heading up to Scotland at the end of August for 10 days, and there is more room and comfort in the Disco compared with my wife's Mini Cooper Countryman

Thanks everyone for your help and advice Thumbs Up

Thanks for the update much appreciated Thumbs Up

I would assume the idler/tensioner pulleys were to be changed every belt change? I did them all on mine to cover all the bases.

Forgot to say if you do some googling on the newer style cam belts, or dayco white belts as I have seen them called, some interesting info.

The belt and idlers need to changed together - for the sake of a small amount of money against 4-5k to replace the engine I wouldn't risk leaving the old idlers fitted

I have heard from another source that they have had problems similar to mine with Dayco belts and idler pulleys

2 year warranty on the kit and mine has been fitted 18 months
