Yesterday I started my discovery 3 and heard a tap tapping noise from the front drivers side of the engine for about 10 to 15 seconds now it's doing it when ever I start the car
Does anyone have any ideas.

Noticed loads D3's making more a quick rattle well suppose it could be discribed as tapping, but not for 5-10 seconds more like 2-5 seconds.

Hi markone i know the sound you are on about but this is a lot louder.
My head is all over the place as I'm now thinking is it a timing belt tensioner or what ?

I would hope not, but shouldn't be to hard to rule that out, as said if it's doing it every time it starts get someone that knows what there at to listen to it. Help put you at ease. Good luck and report back

Top alternater belt tensioner...sounds like one of those foreign cricket insects under the bonnet...disappears as revs increase and warm up....my indy said back in April at service\mot time its common and not an urgent fix. He said even his own D3 was making the same noise.

EGRs are another rather routine cause of a tapping noise.

Hi all thanks for all your input, the EGR have been removed before I got the car , I'm hoping to get it to an independent specialist on Tuesday ( my day off ) why does it always happen when you are trying to sell it, I think she doesn't want to leave me.

Does it do it if you turn the ignition to position II without starting it? My FFRR started making the sound you describe and it turns out it needs a new turbo

The sound is like when you change from high range to low range but keeps going for longer ( that tap clicking sound )

Hi all, well when I brought my discovery I was told that the EGRs had been removed, well just got back from a local independent and they are there but been blanked off, Robbie was right again it's the right side one that's chattering away, So what to do now do I pay out for a new one or can this one be repaired or second hand ?
Thanks for all you input so far, I look forward to reading your replys.
The only reason I ask about second hand is I'm look at selling my discovery 3.

Pull the electrical connector from it and see if the noise goes away.
