Roof bars
Dear All,
I'm really sorry if this is asking the obvious, but just want to double check.
The attached pictures show the roof bar of my D3.
1. I would like to get some roof bars (to transport my kayak/roof box etc)
Am i right in saying that i do not need to get any other fitting kits etc, and a Rhino delta or LR roof bar system can simply be fitted on...
2. Does anyone have any comments/feedback regarding the Rhino Delta 2 bar system?
3. Does anyone have any other advice re: roof bars for kayaking etc?
thanks for any comments - i have found the feedback from this forum really useful!

LR bars will fit straight on. Not sure about the rhino ones. I've just bought the extended roof rails for mine. I have no problem fitting my kayak with the current ones ( the same as yours) but wanted to have the kayak sit a little more forward so I can open the upper tailgate without it contacting the rear of the boat.
Regards DD

I use the LR roof bars with a sea kayak rack bolted into the T-Tracks underneath the rubber cover:

Works fine and the fixed part of the rack stays bolted to the car all year round.

Hi, on the same topic of loading kayaks. Does anyone know the width of the LR / OEM style bars as I need to load 2 kayaks and am not sure if my current vertical support bars will fit on the LR cross bars. Can't find it anywhere.
Thanks

The usable width of the LR bars is poor when compared to Thule equivalents. You also can't buy spares for them (although you will find some Thule parts will fit them).
If you're not carrying much stuff, then it shouldn't be a problem and they will work just fine.
If you're planning on carrying a roof box and a kayak - or any other bits and pieces - then you should look elsewhere.
In summary, the usable width of the LR bars is between 85cm and 90cm. The longest Thule bars you can fit to a D3/D4 give you a usable width of 135cm. Quite a difference.
You might also find the load capacity of other brands is quite a bit higher than the LR ones which, I think, are rated at 80Kg.

I understand that the rhino bars are rated to 50kg each. so if you have a balanced load.... so easily be able to fit my kayak etc on top

Thanks Steve. I actually meant the other width if that makes sense. My vertical bars will only attach to to aero style cross bars that are less than 52mm in width so looking for that dimension.

I have a Thule kayak rack, which worked well for just one kayak on my old car. and when i had to carry another kayak, i simply used straps and ratchets to secure the kayak to the roof bars...
But with the extra height of the disco, I wonder whether using the Thule system is going to be just a bit more difficult to load, especially after a long paddle?
I was thinking simply securing the kayak to the roof bars directly?
