It's a sad day, Disco has died at 231k. |
|
Although I thought my car would go on forever it has died. I was just about to get on the A12 coming back from Colchester last night and I heard a noise from the engine. As I was already committed to the slip road I had to carry on. As soon as I asked for power again there was a knocking from the engine. I pulled over and turned it off and had a check. There was nothing obvious at this stage so I checked the oil and turned it over again. Started fine but was knocking so shut it down. Before the recovery truck arrived there was a pool of oil underneath so I would say it is game over. She is in the garage today for the final verdict. I'm now stuck with the dilemma of new engine or new car! It is a shame as she has been a great car until now. D4 2016 Landmark, Waitomo Grey.
D3 2005 HSE, Bonatti Grey, now sold but still comes back for servicing.
Defender 2002 Td5 Commercial, had a hard life but slowly being restored.

Sad news indeed.
I have a 2005 and would be interested in the cause.
I have resigned myself to binning mine if it lets go.
all the best.

It is probably small consolation that it could well be worth far more as parts than as a whole vehicle. A vaccine does not stop you catching a virus, or passing it on, or getting ill from it, really ill. It does reduce the likelyhood of you dying when really, really ill. Stay Alive - KEEP AWAY FROM PEOPLE.

Sorry to hear that Yours was the first fellow forum member car I saw on the A2 that day. Love the colour too.
If it's any consolation it's a great time to get a cheap deal on a 09 HSE as I'm selling mine before the new one turns up c.11th April MY15 DIY Black Pack (Better than factory and half the price!)

Thanks for all the comments. Yes I have grown quite attached to the old girl in the last five years. The problem is that everything else on the car is as it should be so it seems a shame to scrap her.
If I change car it will take me about two weeks to change over the mods and extras I have fitted thanks to the forum.
Having been bitten with the disco bug it will definitely be another Disco. I think a secondhand engine is the way to go but I'll think it over with a few beers tonight.

Yes, sad news. I've thought what to do when the inevitable finally happens to ours. I haven't come to a conclusion, but I would be very sad to see her go.
Unfortunately, Sounds like a crank related demise.

Well garage have had a look and it has a hole in the block! Looks like the bottom end has let go. I've decided to keep the car and put a secondhand engine in. Have just ordered a 2009 engine with 64k on from Eurojag for £2k. It won't be cheap by the time I've done all the usual jobs that are worth doing whilst the body is off but the rest of the car is so good I couldn't bring myself to scrap her. Hopefully in a few weeks she should be up and running. D4 2016 Landmark, Waitomo Grey.

Good move - maybe an ideal opportunity to get the engine completely "gone over" and any weak areas fixed or upgraded... not many opportunities to really improve on the internals and now would be an ideal time for any polishing/grinding/stronger bolts or gaskets, etc.,
Maybe a larger turbo and intercooler at the same time as a brembo brake upgrade and a BAS remap - after all, it'll be just the same as getting a new car after that lot!!
Either way, good luck with the transplant and hope it all goes smoothly MY15 DIY Black Pack (Better than factory and half the price!)
