fuel filter and autobox

1,If you change the diesel fuel filter on a Disco 3 do you need to bleed the system afterwards? or is it a straight forward swap
2, To check the auto transmission oil level, when you take off the filler plug do you have the engine running and the auto in neutral or park?or just check it cold.
I had the auto oil changed 3 years ago and the kit I bought came with a new filter and 7 litres of ATF,when i picked the car up I was given 2 litres of oil back plus the filter,it was explained to me that to replace the filter cos its attached to the gearbox sump you have to loosen off engine mounts and jack it up to get clearance.
IS THIS DIFFICULT TO DO? and obviously i need to know why ive got 2 litres of surplus oil,i know there would have been some oil left in system when it was drained but does 2 litres seem excessive?
I welcome any feedback

You may have missed the wiki section for maintenance tips. Look here for fuel filter change instructions http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic32281.html

There is a guide to DIY auto change in the wiki, but if I were you and wanted to change the fluid, I would get a sponsor on here to do a "flush" (search for flush, to see why - its the reason you had 2 litres handed back). If you want the filter changed, it can be done, but you will need to replace the combined sump and filter with two part sump and filter. Again, a search will find plenty of threads.

Welcome to the site Thumbs Up There will be someone along shortly who can assist you further with more brains than me, but they will need more info, age , mileage, exact type of oil you are using, s the replacement sump metal?
It is imperative the correct oil is used.
The engine must be running in P with oil temp between 30 and 35degrees fill till overflowing out of level plug.
The sump with the engine switched off sump holds about 5 litres, to do a full change or double flush you need at least 10litres, nearer 12 litres.

The fuel system will need bleeding, fill the new filter with diesel before fitting.

I just replaced my fuel filter, turned ign on and waited 20 or so seconds, did this a couple of times and it fired up and ran just fine.
You can get a new g/box sump and steel filter, its called easy change or something like that, apparently BMW cars use the same box but have a proper sump, did mine the other week.
Loads of places to get the sump from
Bristol Transmissions
Island 4x4
Advanced Factors
Ive had good service from all three suppliers

I was advised at work, Land Rover, never to partially fill filter before fitting as you can possible contaminate the clean side of the filter even if using fluids from sealed containers. This then gets carried into fuel system. engine etc. just where it is supposed to be filtered.I suspect the risk is low but does exist.
