Glycol in the transmission

So I have been doing some investigation on a noise I have at about 40 mph and also at about 110.
I have done a triple flush on the box and the old fluid was black. (Oh dear).
Now after the flush it improved it but it came back. I have been thinking tourqe convertor!! But came across this.
http://www.disco3.co.uk/gallery/albums/use...Manual.pdf
which Indicates the noise I am having is due to glycol contamination.
Would this make the oil go black?
The specialist I use for auto repairs recons the fluid should be a straw colour and not black, but I know of some early boxes having red Atf which does darken over time?.

Now the question is, new radiator and a mega flush circa £400 and a little work. Noise still there due to damaged torque convertor. Start again.
Or new radiator, re-con torque convertor, sump and 10lites of oil £750 and 10 hours work over Easter Weekend, sweating, chaffing knuckles, finding more jobs, brake pipes etc.... Getting Censored of.

Any recomendations on the best route from some one in the know or one of the site sponsors who deals with these repairs more regularly

Thanks

I'm glad you found the guide in my gallery useful but as it states the only way to identify glycol contamination is via a glycol test.

There was a raft of glycol issues posted on here a number of years ago but I have not heard of one for years. I know Geoff has the ability to test for this and that he has done so many times over but I am not sure if he has had any glycol-positive results - it is rare.

I haven't done a definitive test yest, I am considering the blotting paper test or sending some off for testing.
I was hoping people may of had similar issues and be able to advise on the best route for repair.
Although i have this noise I have no judder so it may be fluid issue. Once the torque convertor locks it make no noise unless put under increased load going up a hill. I'm all set to replace the convertor over Easter, but after reading the guide I thought I would seek some further advice before completing the repair as initially I was not planning to replace the radiator. I was just replacing the convertor due to the noise. I obviously don't want a repeat failure due to contamination, and if at all possible don't want to replace it when a mega flush may fix the problem long term.

I think Ive got some oil test papers at work, pm me your address and if I can find them I will post a couple to you.

Have you thought of a remote cooler and a flush?

Mercs early 2000yr models suffered badly from this same fault.

Thanks that's a very kind offer.
Having already done a flush ( drain and refill x3) and the problem returning it's now time for a more permanent cure.
And from what I can see the radiator is not to exspensive and a separate cooler would be a custom install

At 90k I started having TC problems. Had a glycol test that was positive, so ended up installing a separate ATF cooler, leaving the OEM one in place but bypassed. The damage to the friction plates by water in the ATF was halted by Dr Tranny for about a year, but in the end a new TC was required.

What symptoms where you getting?
And how did the box fair up after the glycol incident? Has that required an overhaul as there is friction plates in the box as well as the tc?

I have now done 40k miles with the new TC and same autobox. Changes as good now as it did before. My view is that I changed the fluid and then replaced the TC before any real harm was done. I will get the ATF flushed in about another 20k miles.
