Is It My Torque Converter ????

I would be really grateful for some technical advice, in summary:

• For some while now (say 10k miles) I have been having the ‘dreaded judders’ when going slowly up inclines and very clunky gear changes when going up long mountain roads.

• The rev counter waves about all over the place when the auto box is changing through the gears but is stable when cruising on the motorway.

• If I knock it out of auto mode the problem disappears.

• In 2013 Geoff carried out a gearbox flush, and my local LR dealer in Gibraltar have just changed the gear oil again.

• Each time the gear oil is changed it gear change improves (but is still there) then comes back.

• Also I changed the fuel filter and that seemed to cure the problem for a while.

• From other posts on here is sounds like the torque converter needs replacing/rebuilding and my local gearbox specialist say it is deff. the torque converter and suggests they rebuild/replace it for €1,800.00 (well they would say that!).

• I have had a lot of discussions with the Service Manager my local LR dealer in Gibraltar (who are very good IMHO) who is convinced the problem lies elsewhere, he has suggested the it the next step would be to replace the oil sensor and wiring loom (Circa £120) and another oil change.

Having only last week spent £720 on new compressor, I don’t want to keep spending money on oil changes etc. when the root cause is the torque converter, what do you all think does it sound like a torque converter problem or something else? ?

If it is the torque converter would I be better shipping the car over to Bristol Autos for them to fix? As I am a bit worried the local gearbox place would not have the necessary expertise (they seem to be mainly fixing Audi’s and Porches so LR are not the only car that suffers this problem!)

Comments v gratefully received!

The symptoms you describe are typical of the TC being on the way out.

When the box is in manual, the lockup solenoid valve remains in when you lift off the accelerator - in auto, it will release and become partially locked to "improve" engine breaking - when you get back on the throttle, the revs will rise and then fall as the TC locks backup (If deemed that is what is needed!)

No idea about your local garage, but Bristol Transmissions are very good. Thumbs Up

Can i strongly recommend that you buy some Dr Tranny instant Judder Fix and put 2 tubes in your gear box.

it works wonders, it will at least buy you some time and the total cost will only be about £30.

google it

Thanks all, I was going to try some Dr Tranny, but look like it is the torque converter as originally thought Big Cry Big Cry
