Cambelt change - Stealer or third party to do the work? |
|
My vehicle is a March 2005 with 36K on the clock. I understand that a five year/105k rule applies to the cam belt so will need a change next March at the latest (Any views given low mileage?). I'm concerned about the cost using a dealer (any ideas how much?)
Should I use a dealer or a third party, Most of my out of warranty work on my various cars is done by a neighbour who has a mobile workshop, he's a Peugeot fan and as the 2.7 unit is basically a Citroen/Peugeot unit I'm thinking of asking him if he'd do it. realistically how hard is it?
Apologies for the number of questions.
Yours "credit crunched"

Being done as a mate or as a mechanic? If it's as a mechanic and you are paying him properly for it then I can't see an issue, especially if he does cock it up. But if you pay him as a mate and he's doing you a favour, then who pays for the engine to be rebuilt if he cocks it up?

Hi Simon
Looking at the service schedule it says 105k or 84 months, which makes it March 2012. Mine was registered Sept '05 with at present 20k. I think that I will start to save my pennies before 2012 and take to a dealer and suffer the cost. Point being I hope I would have a come back if it went wrong also they do have the equipment and the knowledge hopefully.

I have a mate who does all my work but he says that a cam belt requires a specialist tool from landrover and it costs £850. I am about to look into the cost of non main dealers to do the work. D3 HSE MY05 Auto

They are the same thing, a camshaft timing belt. Some call it a cambelt others a timing belt.
change at 105K miles or 84 months, whichever is sooner. 2014 D4 XS

My understanding is that there are two belts on a D3 (most cars have one) one at the front of the engine and one at the rear (not sure how true this is please correct if I'm wrong). I believe that if you take your car to a dealer they will take the body off to replace the cambelts. I think this used to be the only way to do it, but there is now a locking tool that enables the work to be done without removing the body.
My mate is going to do mine and I am paying for the tool, maybe I'll hire it out to D3 members! D3 HSE MY05 Auto

cambelt and tentioners falure |
|
i've got a hse on a 56 plate with 24k on clocks and the cambelt tentioner has fell apart causing internal engine damage, so if you get the cambelt changed make sure you get all the tentioners checked as well

I agree that getting the tensioners changed at the same time as the belts is sensible. D3 HSE MY05 Auto
