England

I came from a 2013 Defender 90 to a 2014 D4 Commercial

I loved the defender BUT as an everyday drive I just missed the comfort & convenience of a modern car.

Read the sister defender forum, lots of people on there use them everyday & drive big mileages.

An auto defender is okay provided you do not want to go over 70mph as they are I think a 4 speed auto as opposed to 7 ? speed in the Disco 4.

I would hire a defender for a few days, so you know what the base car is like, fancy leather & trim does not change the narrow cabin width and the often clanking drive train.

Defenders have their fair share of problems as well.

Good luck what ever you decide Thumbs Up

Must admit that I had a shot of a 2007 black twisted Defender 90 a few weeks back.

It was superb Thumbs Up

However it did rattle like a Defender .........

Totally impractical for me, but would be an excellent toy (if I had the extortionate amounts of money required !)

Was more than happy to hand it back, but it did look and sound good !

I think all the specced up Defenders look great. Unfortunately so do the thieving scum. The noise and lack of elbow room and wearing my shin out on the handbrake lever I could all live with but not being able to park it anywhere without worrying to death it would still be there the next morning means that a 110double cab will stay a dream. Too many people I know have had them taken off their drives in places that most would consider low risk.

If I need the authentic experience I'll go and swing the handle on the series 1...........and then go back to my heated leather armchair on wheels.

I have had my D4 for 4 years now and love it, bought a specced up Defender 90 (late model) a year ago, so I am lucky to have both, as many have said before, if the journey is more than 20 mins then its the D4, the Defender is great fun to nip around for short journeys and rough stuff, but if you have to drive it for long journeys regularly, and you are used to a D4, then the fun will wear off.

Aside from get through narrower lanes, I don't think there's anything a Defender can do that a D3 couldn't... is there?

If you wanted to remove complexity you could go for a coiler base model with manual transmission.

It'd be cheap to buy, miles more comfy, lots of mods available and as long as you're not precious with it just as much fun and practicality (actually more)

I've been considering a 2nd car for the everyday family stuff to then potentially modify the D3 so it'll be the fun family car, vinyl a fun colour, black pack, spotlights, chunky tyres, leather seats all covered, turn it in to to real do anything car and have something on the drive to cater for the "smart"/Classy work.

At the moment my D3 in buck blue does everything (impressively) but I do worry about ruining it.

Prospeed rock/tree sliders w/steps
HSE Winter wheels
TransK9 B24
Travall Cargo Guard

I sold my D3 as I did not want to ruin it as we have some building work that we are undertaking so kept the D2 for that...I had a 110 and never really worried about that aspect.

Why not get a D3 AND a 110 .. go for ones that are a few years older... the Best of Both Worlds!
 1 TR6 Rusting away quietly
1 FARR UTV SOLD
1 International Harvester SOLD
7 x D3 all SOLD
2 x D4 both SOLD
1 x Mrs D4 'Panther' SOLD
1 x Outlander van SOLD
1 continual stream of car parts and me living in the garage...

Short trips in a Defender, no problem, 1000 mile trips and you will regret getting rid of the D4, it will drive you mad.

Stick with the D4, its a no brainer.

Hi Mark,

I wouldn't give up your Disc 4 for a 110 Defender they are completely different Vehicles. Try and get hold of a demo 110 Defender to try out before you buy one to make sure it is what you want.

I have a 2012 110 Defender and have just brought a 2012 Disc 4 Commercial basic model even the basic Disco is a dream to drive compared to my Defender.

Best regards

Jim
