How safe is the D3 / D4 ?

Just browsing all things Land Rover and came across this article.
It had been posted on the forum a good few years ago, but for those that missed it or were'nt around.
A bit of sober reading here:

Shocked

I read that the reason the Discovery 3 didnt get a 5star encap rating becasue it wasn’t friendly to pedestrians and other cars in crash tests. It was not the lack of protection to the Discovery occupants.

The story is very sobbering and horrific.

my information maybe wrong but that was my understanding.

The Disc 3/4

is a huge car & has a mass that to me denotes its built form substantial materials.
it has both a chassis & the hydro formed floor pan which makes it incredibly strong (& capable).

I have sen pictures of the usual crash tests & at that time they pased the standards expected.

we all realise if we (in a D3/4) hite something or are hit the Disco is going to fare very well &if the other vehicle isnt substantial its going to suffer. A fact we cant alter (& to me I would never want to)

I saw the aftermath of a Chrysler Avenger passnegr car that hit an RUC defender in Northern Ireland...the driver & two passengers of the saloon car all were killed...the Land rover was a bit crumpled & the driver suffered some chest injuries where he hit the steering wheel - but the other 4 RUC officers were unhurt. We were the first onthe scene & we immediately thought bomb.

My elder brother was shunted from the rear by a Defender in his Volve 240...notably a very strong saloon car...the back bumper was under the rear window...the wjhole boot did what it was designed to do & crumpled. My brother suffered a back injury as the driver seat collapsed. The Defender was totally drivable...the Volveo 240 written off.

It does depend on what hits a Disco & some even quite modern vehicle arent that stong....because they have been value engineered & lightened to conform to other things like fual economy.

You pay your money & take your choice...my choice is & will be a well made 4wd drive every time = Disco.
 BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

When you park in A car park, facing another generic Eurobox, it makes you realise just how much higher you are over just about everything else, and the crumple zone of their car, is the front end of your chassis. The strongest part of the car

It's one area where I feel it's ok to be a little bit "I'm alright Jack"
Looking out for the safety of your family should never be something to be ashamed of.

There are many, MANY, idiots on the roads these days who drive around like they own the roads and most of them are quite inexperienced drivers with high powered vehicles.

If we go on any long distance journey, or go out in any bad weather/bad visibility then it's in the Disco.

Because if someone hits us, or heaven forbid, we hit them then I know It's in one of the strongest vehicles I could afford.

I agree with Scarab above

We went for the discovery having been involved in a fatal RTC.

We were lucky that we were only hit by debris.

Had I been hit the traffic officer said my wife would have died, my 6 month old son would be lucky to have only life changing injuries and would I be a mess.

I was driving a VW Passat estate (2 year old 59 plate at the time) the Ford Focus and motor bike along with passengers were unrecognisable.

A sobering thought that haunts me today.

When ever I take my children out now it is always in the Discovery.

It is very much a case of my children's safety first due to the minority of idiots that are allowed to drive on our roads Evil or Very Mad

The other reasoning for the 4 star rating is that, AIUI, the NCAP rating is based on a head on collision with a vehicle of the same size. I.e. if two Discos were to hit each other, they would come out worse than two FL2s.

The safety of a vehicle will always be strongly correlated to weight and size. Thumbs Up

Quite sobering seeing that wreckage. Makes me appreciate my D3 even more. Not only is it a great practical vehicle, but it keeps my family safe (as can be). I keep boring everyone I know about it being the best vehicle I've ever owned Mr. Green

Just a pic & quote for those who didn't click the link:

"What you can see is a Land Rover Discovery 3, one of the G4 Challenge spec vehicles. It's recognisable as a Discovery 3 even if the G4 colour wasn't a giveaway.
The pile of metal next to the Discovery was, at one point, an Audi A4".

Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated Mr. Green
