Terrible fuel consumption ! |
|
Had the car about 3 weeks now and being my first auto expected it to be more thirsty then my previous manual but it is terrible on the diesel , when i drove it home i was surprised to see 20 on the average fuel consumpion but after resetting today its dropped even more to 18 then 17 , I've done a search but no easy explanation , prob been asked loads of times but any way to get up to at least mid 20s

What sort of driving? Urban, short trips, high speed motorway, etc?
Oh, and dont forget that the trip comp lies by 2 - 5mpg.
Check for binding brakes, ie hot wheels. Check carefully, back of hand across the face of the wheel, not fingies on the disk. That will hurt!

there might be a few things causing it:
binding calipers
bad clutch slipping
fuel system issues
also minor influence might be caused by crap wheel alignment and tire pressures
and many more

How old is the car? Might need the EGR's blanking. I found with my auto either 2 stroke oil or injector cleaner helps to increase mpg, round town I'm getting 26mpg and on a run about 31mpg. But this is from the lie-meter.. 2007 D3 XS Auto 101k

When was it last serviced?- and by whom? It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Under those conditions I get typically 18 - 20mpg (reality, not trip), bit more in the summer and a bit less when it's cold. Even with everything working ticketyboo I wouldn't have thought you'd get much more.

I've averaged 18 or so for the last few fillups - all urban and short journeys at that. I did go to Manchester on Thursday and after about 1/2 a tank of urban it did climb to 24mpg (Real) - that was a good clear run both ways and cruising at around 70-73mph. Mark.

Best I've ever got in 110Kmiles is a shade over 30 - that was with the Prospeed rack on, plus rocksliders, underbody protection, ladder etc. But it was up the M1 when the roadworks were on for bloody miles.
I've really stopped worrying about it - if I wanted an economical car I'd have got a BMW Mark.
