Keep as much moisture out of the fuel as possible try not to store diesel in drums that are less than full.

And watch what diesel your buying and what location your getting it from. Apart from that don't know what other precautions you could take.

Buy decent quality diesel.m Keep the tank full so you don't get condensation.

Use Wynns Fuel Biocide "Wynns Fuel Biocide Destroys the diesel bug. Destroys and prevents bacteria, algae and fungi in the fuel tank. Prevents filter plugging. Does not affect fuel quality."

There are other similar products.

I find that I get smoother running, easier starting & (probably) slightly more MPG with Shell Advanced fuel that with cheaper supermarket diesel.

I bought some very cheap diesel in Greece about 12 months ago, and MPG dropped from c. 26 to c.24, and the car ran very roughly despite adding SO2, with hindsight I should probably have doubled the dose.

If you have got your own bulk tank you need to fit a filter and add some anti bug additive to the tank! Thumbs Up

Very unuasual to get the bug in road diesel as forecourt stock are replenished and also treated at refinery before delivery unless you have water in your tank or are running red diesel or bio diesel in your tank. You do not say where you purchase your fuel from. Again if in doubt add biocide to the fuel and monitor or the other option will be to have your fuel tank and fuel cleaned via multiple filter and centrifuge clean. There are companies who do this service.

Never heard of it in a car, seen a one truck filter in 8 years that was pretty snotty, bug is very common in the leisure boat world, well worth a search.

Likewise, not had it in a car. One of the tractors had it after sitting idle for a few months over winter. Ended up draining the tank and pressure washing the inside of it. Additive has sorted it every winter since

I doubt it is diesel bug Shocked you have inadvertently filled up with summer grade diesel, it will return back to normal once the temperature rises, keep the car parked in a garage if possible until you have refueled with winter grade diesel, the best way to do this is to buy your diesel from a filling station that has a large turnover, smaller garages/filling stations may well be selling fuel stock they bought late last summer.
I have had the same problem with agricultural diesel that was purchased in bulk in July and that is stored under cover, seems summer diesel is more susceptible to cold nowadays Shocked

Summer road diesel April to October and will wax at -5 degrees C
Winter road diesel November to March and will wax at -15 degrees C

Other countries will be different depending on severity of winter conditions.

When diesel starts to crystal or wax it will also have a cloudy appearance.

Before common rail diesels engine it was not uncommon to add some petrol to a diesel car to prevent waxing of diesel, but now with common rail diesels this is not recommended due to high pressure rail temperatures in modern vehicles.

Waxing may be the reason why some D3 owners are having issues with starting on frost mornings due to possible summer fuel in fuel tank.

had it on boat tanks...what you need is a tank clean out...then MARINE 16 treatment...google it...its what the RNLI use...think a litre is about 55 quids....some marines now as a matter of course put it in their stock tanks....our marina spend 625 quid on 25 litre drums...the adding of bio fuel is not helping the situation....
