Temperature Gauge

Did a 400 mile round trip today and on the out bound journey every so often the temperature gauge would drop to nothing and after a few minutes come back up to normal, heater and general running (returned normal 15.5mpg) seemed unaffected. On the return journey she was good as gold, any thoughts?

Probably the sensor but I've not seen one fail cold, only failed hot.

I think I would like to see live data to be sure the sensed and displayed temps agreed.

Plugged my basic OBDII reader in and has a fault code pending P0116 Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Range/Performance Problem. ==================================

Just had the same fualt on my car and it was the Oil temp sensor in the sump..
