Common issues at the back, in no particular order, are the upper arm bushings which would give you the wayward feeling you're getting, although mine never knocked I don't see why they couldn't. Anti-roll bushes also fail and commonly knock and the panhard rods can fail which wouldn't knock but would certainly make the back feel less controlled.
They're all within the realms of a reasonable DIY'er but replacement of the rear upper will require a realignment.-------------------------------------------------------------------

The D3 doesn't have panhard rods, but maybe you mean the drop links between the roll bar and the lower wishbones.

I used to call them drop links but people on here corrected me. I don't know the difference.... -------------------------------------------------------------------

A panhard rod is used on cars such as the D2 which has live axils and without some means of restraining them these axils they would move sideways out of place as the car moved especially on corners. To prevent this a panhard rod is used to restrain the axil with one end attached to the axil and the other to the body or chassis.
The D3 has no need for these as it has independent suspension. The manuals for both the D2 and D3 refer to the drop links as roll bar links.

Advanced Factors refer to the Panhard Rod as the Tie rod not the drop link?Current: D3 TDV6 S; GGAT's, DIY 7inch Tablet mount, DIY Reversing Camera, Stage 1 remap, EGR delete

That fine, tie rod, though there again a tie rod is more usually considered part of the steering linkage. So to be really strict on this they are wrong. No wonder people have difficulty knowing what is what on cars when even the suppliers misname them.
