Vibration at 80-90, Balancing?

Guys,

I've got a vibration at around early 70s and again around 80-90, these are the times the oscillation seems worst through the steering wheel.

Not so bad I can't drive but definitely something I want tot ry and sorry before I take the tin tent to Brittany in the early hours of Tuesday!!

Could it simply be balancing?

I've put my summer wheels on, I do have one tyre that's new compared to the others as it's the spare (had a puncture repair on one tyre so put that in as spare and used spare on the rear)

I'd say I'm running 70% worn at front, rear is 85% worn and 0% worn

By worn I mean before they get to wear indicators and I get them changed - trying to get as much use as possible as am going to change all four at the same time.

So... could this be the uneven tyre wear? Or is it more likely to be balancing and I should get down to the tyre fitters to get everything re balanced?

Should also say, had the front lower arms replaced by Geoff about a month ago plus a full 4 wheel alignment afterwards. So I'm not expecting any of this to be an issue.

It could be. If you have had recent work it could be a bit of grit on the wheel/hub face so check that first.

If the vibration is through the car rather than just the steering at that speed I am thinking tow electrics, if you have them fitted.

Thumbs Up

It feels like it is just through the wheel, holding with one hand and you can see the vibration in my hand.

At 60 mph not really there.

How would tow electrics cause this? Interesting diagnosis that one Smile

Ok if just the wheel then it is not the tow electrics (which can catch on the swinging D3 'b0llocks').

Not sure if the D3 is sensitive to the new tyre sitting with the well worn ones... I may take the puncture repaired one from spare and put it back on so I have even wear and try again.

It's a good question and one I can't answer.... I don't think so... didn't do any motorway runs for a bit - I think it is since putting on the spare so first port of call will be to swap that back out with the puncture repaired one and go for a spin.

Thing is the spare went on the back but the vibration is through the steering wheel at the front.

Will swap out today and test as have next to no time between now and Tuesday night to fix it if there's a problem.

ok so, just went out to check and the front drivers side had a loose wheel nut - only one so not sure if that's enough to cause the problem as all the other were tight as can be.

so will have to go test this first before then swapping the tyres....

Running out of time today so took the car to Kwik Fit and asked them to balance wheels and change the full tread spare back to spare and put the puncture repaired rear back on (which I had put in spare)

All sorted although interestingly no weights had come off yet almost every wheel needed correction.

Also visite Geoff to quickly sort out a brake issue - thanks for that Geoff, the holiday would have been slightly less enjoyable if we'd not got that sorted!!!

Happy now... plus a V8 disc upgrade to look forward to when I get home Smile

If it's in the early 70's and between 80 and 90 it shouldn't be a problem on public roads, and if you're towing a tin tent abroad, then it still shouldn't be a problem. Wink

I must be a pussy, I would never drive a 2.5 ton brick over 70MPH, 2.5 tons takes a bit of handling at 80MPH if you get a blow out.

Oddly enough, and I appreciate for some this may be a "new" way of thinking, but when I get to the destination we're camping out at, I UNHITCH the tin tent!!! I know, I know, difficult to comprehend but you really don't have to take it with you every time you want to pop to the local village market, down to the beach, or off down a green lane.

And, as I have various electronic and non-electronic stabilisers on the "outfit" it kind of makes sense to not ignore the obvious handling issue you have, especially when it results in oscillations through the steering wheel - just in case it might be something more serious.

Investigating the symptoms with Geoff actually found an issue that could have been a serious problem for us and possibly even dangerous in an emergency braking situation, so even happier I didn't "leave it because I won't drive that fast"

Bloody pedants.... Wink Rolling with laughter

Hmmmm. Where in Brittany are you going? Just so the rest of us can avoid the area when you nip to the local shops at 80-90! Whistle
