Last Minute Tyre Dilemma! |
|
Aaaargh... why do I do these things at the last minute!
So we are due to go on a trip to the new forest tomorrow, 6 of us in the disco. Roof box fitted... Check. Oil... Check. Screenwash... check. Tyre pressure... check...uh oh...
So I noticed a sidewall bulge in the rear offside tyre, which I just inflated to 2.9 bar for the full load. I'm not comfortable driving with that for a few hours at motorway speeds. So I checked the spare and fitted it. It's OK but quite worn on the inner edge and won't do long term.
So I need to order some new tyres to arrive while i'm away and i'll get fitted when back next weekend. I'll use the rear nearside as the new spare which is 4mm and even.
Question is do I just get 2 new pirelli's to match (new at the rear, existing 3-4mm at the front), 4 new pirelli's all around, or change away from pirelli's all around?
If I'm quick I can get 4x pirelli zero's for £440 delivered (not fitted) (or 2 for 200).
Alternatively I've seen Hankook Ventus ST's for £106 a corner and Vredestein sessanta for £100.
This is the wife's car mainly and does mixed driving, no off road. I understand the p zero only do half the mileage of some others (like michelins) but they are also nearly half the price. She's only done 3000 miles in 4 months. These all seem to get good reviews on tyrereviews.co.uk.
So questions...
1) Which of these would you pick
2) Would it be OK to just get 2 p zero's and leave the 3-4mm's on the front (from the perspective of mismatched sizes, i've had BMW X that are sensitive to this)
3) Any other good quality tyres around this price that are better?
I'm favoring the p zero's, being a premium brand for good money.
Cheers all

I have had Hankook in the past and highly recommend them, probably the best hard wearing tyre I've had, but not the best in the wet. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Scorpion Zeros are probably the best road tyre you can fit to your D3 but don't expect them to last very long, especially if your suspension components are displaying signs of wear. 15-20k miles maximum.
No experience of Hankooks here. Would probably avoid the Vreds, myself.
Aways fit new tyres to the rear if you're only replacing two.

Why don't you stop at AJS on your way to the New Forest that way you can have safe and legal tyres and only arrive 30 minutes or so later? DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

I've think I've settled for the pirelli's - too good a price to ignore, and with the brats and wife being in there good road holding is a priority. It'll be a few years before they need doing again even with faster wear. Probably a good thing actually longer lasting ones will perish before the wear down!
AJ's - not a bad idea, but the zero's are nearly double the price (only £3 cheaper than my local kwik fit). The spare is not illegal, it's just no good to stay on and leave until the other 3 wear down.
Thanks for replies!

I'd stick with the Zero's. Brilliant road biased tyre for the D3/4. I love the steering feel and accuracy that they give.
They have quite a soft compound, which when combined with the weight and torque of the Disco results in faster wear than some other tyres. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

If you're coming south and passing Winchester you make a small diversion to Mitchelldever tyres. They are ine of the main importers of tyres and alwYs keenly priced. Look them up on Google
